Review:

Steve: Sunday, February 10th saw the return of The Walking Dead. Well, at least the second part of the third season (why does AMC do that, anyway?). In addition to the show’s return with some new characters (Tyreese and his group), HorrorTalk’s breakdown of these episodes makes a comeback with a new person. After season two, James lost his taste for the show, all but giving up on it. After a mourning period, I decided to put on my big boy pants and reach out to TGM to see if he’d be interested in giving this piece a rebirth. He was, and here you go.

TGM: It’s great to have The Walking Dead back.  Yeah, whomever invented this half season bullshit deserves a punch in the hairy yam sack.

SP: So last night, a couple of things were established: The Governor is still crazy, Rick is following that path, Daryl chose family first, Tyreese is going to be the new cool character, Michonne is still a mute, Andrea still thinks with her dick, and Glenn is getting real tired of Rick’s bullshit. Am I missing anything?

TGM: Just that Herschel should stick to healing animals, because everyone knows that you don’t let someone with a concussion sleep it off.  Oh, and I’m a little irked at Maggie for being such a rag to Glenn for no real obvious reason.  Do you think Maggie is letting Glenn believe she was raped by The Governor?  I mean, I’ve been molested more on the subway.

SP: Good point on the concussion. Maybe cows don’t get them. I don’t know why the sudden mood change with both Maggie and Glenn and the rape implication. Not only did we all see it that all that happened was her shirt was taken off, but she already told Glenn that nothing happened. I don’t know what the angle is here. I just hope she doesn’t turn into the new Lori. Speaking of new Loris, did you see that kiss and look that Beth gave to Rick when he got back? Also the way she’s taken to the baby? Looks like a kitty cat has an itch that needs scratched.

But, more importantly, WTF DARYL! He up and left with his brother!

TGM:  Yeah! From a completely selfish standpoint I wanted Daryl to stay with the group, basically because he’s the most badass character still left in the game, and any minute that he’s not in front of the camera is a wasted one. He’s the illegitimate love child of a rednecked Boba Fett and Steve McQueen.  With that said, I understand why he would take off with his brother, even if Merle is a total jackass.  Blood and all.  I think Tyreese has a chance to inject some kickass mojo into the group during Daryl’s (hopefully short) absence.  Carol’s got needs, man!

So, is now a good time to bring up how unhinged Rick has become?

SP: You are so right. I found Carol’s take on the whole thing so interesting, when she compared Merle’s effect on Daryl to Ed’s (her dead husband) effect on her. She’d like to think she’s stronger now that she’s a changed woman, but she very well could roll over and leave with him if he walked through the door alive and breathing and told her to go. That said, Beth had the most truthful line in the show regarding Daryl. “We’re weak without him.” And she’s right. Since Shane’s unpleasant demise, the strongest member of the team, hands down, has been Daryl and he can’t leave. I suspect Tyrese will slide into that role nicely, but I don’t care. He’s not Daryl. (Granted, Carl is becoming quite the badass too. He shot his own mother for Christ’s sake.)

Regarding Rick...ug. It seems with each episode, I’m getting more and more tired of him. First it was his hero complex, now this garbage. Just join Lori already. You won’t be missed.

TGM: I’ve been a Rick supporter up until last nights episode. I simply don’t like how extremely batshit crazy they have made him.  Although you do have to feel for the guy, having to be the leader of this group of misfits.  I mean, let’s face it, he’s done well keeping them alive up until this point, having a pregnant lady, a 13-year-old, a skinny Asian guy, a one-legged geezer, and a harem of women as his backup.  That’s why Daryl’s departure is so huge. The weight of the world is on Rick’s shoulders, but one has to wonder how anyone could feel comfortable following him now?

SP: But here’s the thing, Shane did it better. While Rick was off taking a nap, Shane had everything under control. Then Johnny Comes Lately rolls into town putting his two cents in. Not only that, Rick has always put himself before the group. How many times has he put his people in jeopardy because of his antics? A prime example of this would be at the farm last season when he was helping Hershel collect zombies. Seriously, Rick? He knows better. Granted, I can see your point on how this responsibility would weigh on a leader, no doubt, but Rick is a pretty shitty leader to begin with. I almost agree with you about the breakdown is too extreme, but then again, this could have been a long time coming. Apparently, the time spent between the farm and the prison is longer than season one and two combined. Who knows what happened when they were on the road. I’m still eagerly waiting to hear what happened during that whole period. It seems everyone was changed. Hell, just look at Carl. Before we had to worry Carl with a gun because he might accidentally shoot himself, now we worry about Carl with a gun because he might intentionally shoot someone else. Something happened, and now there’s this dark cloud over the whole group.

TGM: Well, Shane is rotting in a field somewhere, so enough of the Shane talk.  HE’S NOT COMING BACK, STEVE.  Even though we both agreed that we were firmly entrenched in Team Shane over Team Rick.  Now you’ve got to just play with the cards you’re dealt.  I just hope that Rick’s psychotic break didn’t scare Tyreese et al too far away.  Herschel is right, they need reinforcements, and mumbles Michonne just isn’t cutting it.  Which reminds me of a legit LOL moment last night when Daryl called her “the last samurai”.   So, hey, I couldn’t quite tell (thanks to AMC’s uber soft high-def signal), but did that Lori apparition at the end of the episode have a half-zombified face?

SP: She was just in shadow for me, so I couldn’t tell. You know, the more I think about it, the more I really like Hershel. He’s like everything Dale should have been. He’s a voice of reason without being preachy. Plus he has a backbone. Come to think of it, even when he was running Zombie Storage USA, I still never had a problem with him. And regarding Shane, some wounds will never heal.

How come we haven’t discussed The Governor? Granted, he wasn’t in this episode that much, but when he was, my, my. One of my favorite scenes last night is when that guy who had been mauled by zombies was crying like a girl, and someone was yelling to Andrea to help him, while Andrea sat there with a dumb look on her face. Tired of the noise, The Governor walks up to the crying man and shoots him in the head without missing a beat. I tell you what, I for one cannot wait for the inevitable showdown between him and Rick. If it’s even close to the comics, I will be a very happy man.

TGM:  In some weird way, The Governor is one of the more sympathetic characters.  I mean, the guy organizes sanctuary and protection amidst the chaos, something that was working pretty damned well until Michonne showed up and threw a monkey wrench in the gears.  They were having ice cream socials for fuck's sake!  And this is how they repay him when the shit starts to hit the fan?  I don’t blame him.  His way was working.  He’s just a slightly varied shade of gray from Rick these days, don’t you think?

SP: That’s a great observation. Granted, he’s insane, but he does have a sweet thing going for the town and the people who live in it. Well...did. THANKS, MICHONNE.  I have no idea what his motivation is, because he is, you know, a psychopath, but he’s a good one to have around. And, no, you won’t get me on Team Rick. The Governor has a town, Rick has a prison. If Shane were still in charge, they would have merged with The Governor, Shane would have offed him, and everyone would be having picnics. Rick won’t even let four people in the group when they desperately need them. How messed up is it that the guy who keeps heads on display is a better leader than you.

TGM: Goddamned Shane again.  Hopefully Rick can find a stash of Xanax and get his head screwed on right.  Hopefully Daryl suffers one too many wedgies at the hands of his older brother and he comes back to the group.  And hopefully Michonne dies in her sleep from Herschel’s bad advice.

SP: And hopefully we find out soon what turned Carl from annoying douchnozzle to ‘holy shit, we got a badass over here’.

TGM: Well, you put a bullet in your own mom’s head you’ve earned a lifetime membership to Badassville.  Well, this was fun, Steve.  Looking forward to next weeks episode. Sunday night can’t come fast enough!

SP: Indeed! Not a whole lot happened this episode, but a lot of groundwork was laid out for the remainder of the season and I’m already excited for next week.
