Review:

East Stackton was my favorite 27 minutes of horror movie in a long time. Crisp, witty, and a clear sense of being well-loved by all participants in the film; everything that makes a compelling idea a great film.

Carroll Whitfield has his work cut out for him. The Chicagoan is coming into the bayou to complete a 6-month efficiency check up on the new House and Home megastore. Unfortunately their efficiency includes bankrupting the independent stores in town and non-employees of H&H are none too pleased to host the City Boy, including a bonfire, a machete, and a good old-fashioned murderous mob. As the bodies start turning up, he's in a hurry to get out of East Stackton…but now that he's here, he may not be able to leave.

The acting can get a bit amateur and the dialogue occasionally awkward; the CGI is a little cheap although better than most SyFy original features. It's a short film so I don't want to give away too much, but this concept is delightful. What starts off as a rally against the incorporation of America quickly turns to The Wicker Man before evolving into The Last Exorcism meet the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. But East Stackton won me by how well this film was loved by its makers. The dedication and adoration was evident and so very appreciated in an age of impersonal and soulless blockbusters.

This lack of a bloated budget helped this story keep its heart. Instead of special effects and showy tricks, this remains a story about a man in danger fighting for his life without the distractions with which we are bombarded today. East Stackton may be inspired by many greats that came before, but its unique combination and point of view allow it to stand proudly on its own.

Karin doesn't know anything about movies. Really. How she graduated from Towson University's dramatic arts program with honors is a mystery to everyone involved. But she is really opinionated about many things so we did her a favor and let her rant incoherently here. She lives in New York where she can blend in with the other lunatics who also argue emphatically that you cannot compare Captain Kirk to Captain Picard. She's writing her first novel and may even publish it.
