Giant monsters have crash landed all over the planet and tons of super heroes have responded to punch them right in their collective mouths. Unfortunately, more and more are appearing just as quickly as the heroes are putting them down. Meanwhile, a handful of people are spending the time to actually figure out what's going on instead of rushing right into the violence.
If you read the first issue of Monsters Unleashed, you'll find a lot of the same stuff here. Members from the Avengers, X-Men, Champions, Inhumans, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more are trying their hardest to take down Godzilla-sized creatures that are wreaking havoc all over the place. There are a few notes about some cities being evacuated, but no place is safe. This is a global threat that is causing millions if not billions of dollars in property damage and an untold amount of deaths. These monsters have dropped down in major metropolitan areas around the world.

This issue spends some more time with monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone as she figures out what's causing these sudden appearances of monsters. It's pretty clear that's Kei Kawade, a young boy who has been drawing all kinds of creatures in his notebook. This isn't necessarily a new idea. It's most recently seen in Red Thorn, published by Vertigo Comics. Kei doesn't seem to have any control over what happens, nor any real idea that his doodles are causing the aforementioned catastrophic damage.
Greg Land handles the pencils for this issue, taking over for Steve McNiven. Both have very detailed, action-packed art styles, so they complement one another on the book. Land tends to do draw these glamour shots of characters, even when they're in mortal danger. If you've ever read one of his comics, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. It's that shot of a woman who looks like she just yelled something like “Let's get wasted!” at a nightclub.

The monsters are absolutely insane. They're massive piles of muscle, teeth, and eyes that see humans as pesky insects to be squashed under their feet. In a world where these heroes fight villains like the Red Skull and Baron Zemo (or each other), this is something they're rarely up against. Granted, there are literal gods on some of these teams, but it's still a challenge.
Monsters Unleashed expands a bit, but it's more of the same we saw in the debut issue. Here are your favorite heroes punching, stabbing, and shooting lightning at gigantic monsters that are absolutely annihilating the world's biggest cities. Sooner or later, they'll stop the violence, but how can anyone rebuild from something like this? Where can anyone possibly go from there? We'll probably never find out as there will be some other threat for the super heroes to tackle.
