Review:

Is it just me or are a lot of horror stories way too serious?  Every other comic I read is about the end of the world or vampires killing everyone.  Not everything has to be the apocalypse.  This is why it's so refreshing to see Monster Dudes, an anthology comic written by Dave Scheidt and illustrated by Matt Fagan, which aims to poke fun at the stuffy world of Dracula and his pals.

Monster Dudes could have been incredibly cheesy, filled with lame jokes about vampires dying from eating Italian food or werewolves getting flea bathes.  Fortunately, it looks down on gags like that, aiming for a slightly smarter punchline.  There are still slapstick elements, but they never feel stupid or thrown in for a cheap laugh.

"Grocery Store", the first in the anthology, is my favorite tale.  It's a two-page story showing Bigfoot shopping at his local supermarket.  He's enticed by some free samples only to find out they're organic vegan crap.  Needless to say, he is not happy.  His reaction is priceless and gets this issue off to a great start.  Bigfoot does what we all want to do when confronted by some uptight health conscious foodie trying to impress us with their salads and other non-meat foods.

This debut issue of Monster Dudes crams an impressive 11 stories into its 28 pages.  Some are as short as a single page, but that's enough for Scheidt to get the punchline in.  There's not a weak tale in the bunch, which is surprising for an anthology title.  The other stories range from the further adventures of Bigfoot -- which make me want to read an ongoing comic about his various encounters with the human world -- to typical sitcom setups but made with monsters, such as "Minimum Wage Mummy”, where a teenage mummy is forced to get a job to help his family pay the bills.

Matt Fagan's artwork is slightly cartoony which works great with Scheidt's stories.  This is far from serious stuff.  This isn't like a Looney Tunes-esque zany comic with people getting flattened by anvils and the like.  Instead the characters look harmless.  Yes, the vampires competing in "America's Toughest Draculas" could suck the life right out of you, but they look rather silly posing in their swim suits.

Monster Dudes #1 is an impressive first outing for Dave Scheidt and Matt Fagan.  They have a second issue out already and I hope to see more from the duo as the genre needs some of this tongue-in-cheek type humor.  The horror comics of today take themselves too seriously, so when two guys can poke fun at some of the biggest monsters out there, it's fun.
