"Killogy #4" Comic Review

Frank Vincent, Marky Ramone, and Brea Grant have been rotting in a prison cell as a horde of zombies claw at them through the bars. They're hungry and desperate. They need to get out and they're certainly not opposed to killing a few undead cops to make that happen. This isn't a multi-million dollar movie. This is the final issue of Alan Robert's Killogy, a comic in which the main characters are based on real people.
Robert spent the first three issues of the series providing the reason that each of these convicts ended up in jail. What was more interesting was how their lives relate to one another in ways that they didn't know before being tossed into the same cell. All three are connected and they're all partially responsible for the zombies that are right outside their door. Through some pretty crazy circumstances, they make their way out of the prison, but can they stop the hordes of the undead? Or do they just go their separate ways? They are convicts, after all.

The resolution to Killogy has been hinted for a bit previously, but the final chapter feels rushed. The first three issues were focused primarily on the backstory of each character, giving them plenty of room to breathe. Now that the stage is set, Robert moves very fast to tie up the loose ends and get the story resolved. It makes sense, but I can see how another issue or even a few more pages might have been beneficial in giving each aspect of the tale enough space.
Despite this, the last few pages of Killogy are a great closer to the series. It features something that literally comes out of nowhere. It's quite fitting considering the adventure that the characters have gone through to date as well as the overall tone of the series.
Robert's artwork has continued to improve and excel throughout Killogy. This book is filled with some pretty horrifying images and they're all perfectly framed like they were stills from a major motion picture. Robert's visuals tend to break from conventional paneled layouts, instead offering more large scale, cinematic shots that don't fit into your basic rectangular layout. He also does a kickass double page spread. He uses the space to amplify the story. There's a section early on where an ambulance is barreling through a mob of zombies. Bodies are flying every which way. The two-page image is the kind of painting that would look good framed on a wall. There are zombies in the foreground in exquisite detail. The full moon is behind them with silhouettes of bodies outlined in the light. Then there's a smaller panel off to the side featuring the driver's reaction as he realizes his final fate. It's awesome.

Killogy has been a great ride. My only complaint about the series is that it had to end. Of course, that's the fault that plagues all zombie movies and one of the reasons The Walking Dead is so successful. Robert draws you in with the stories of each of these characters. The fact that their lives are so intertwined is some LOST level intricacies but without all the stupid crap that no one cares about. (I'm looking at you, Bai Ling.) I guess the question now is after three successful comic series in which he created, wrote, illustrated, inked, colored, and lettered everything, what is Alan Robert going to do next?
