You've heard the story of a group of co-eds looking to stay in a haunted house for thrills before. They get together with the intent of having a good time with some beer and then things go horribly wrong. But what if that house contained the famed looking glass from Alice in Wonderland? And what if the Mad Hatter was a homicidal maniac peering through said looking glass searching for victims?
Such is the case with the 2011 Wonderland Annual. This is a one shot issue written by Ralph Tedesco with a nice twist on a story we've seen in dozens of horror movies. It ties in the the Wonderland universe just enough, but also works as a story for new readers (myself included). It can be enjoyed even if you don't know anything about the current events in the ongoing title.
Randy Valiente handles the art for the book, but he leaves much to be desired. The basics are there, but his work often looks unfinished in the Annual. Also, all of the characters appear to have very long, oval-shaped heads. Think Bert from Sesame Street and you have the right idea. The backgrounds all look pretty good and Johnny Liddle (aka The Mad Hatter) looks great, possibly because he's often shrouded in darkness when he appears.
There are three covers available for this book, but horror fans should be clamoring for the awesome original cover by Sean Chen and Nei Ruffino. It's a great homage to the infamous scene from The Shining where Nicholson breaks into the bathroom with the axe. Herrrrreeee's The Mad Hatter!
This was my first foray into the Wonderland universe, but it provides just enough info to make me want to check out more. The Annual isn't bogged down with continuity, but knowing a bit about the background helps.
