VAMPIRES FIGHT IN THE CIVIL WAR IN KROS: HALLOWED GROUND
The Civil War was pretty bad on its own, what with all the death and slavery. You know what would have made it worse? Vampires. Creators John Ostrander and Tom Mandrake are about to show us what that might be like in Kros: Hallowed Ground, a new original graphic novel that the pair is funding through Kickstarter. The historical horror comic takes place during the Civil War (duh) and features vampires crawling through the battlefield under the cover of darkness to feed. This reminds me a bit of the origin of Baltimore by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. One man stands against this bloodsucking horde. Kros, a dampyr with an inborn hatred of vampires knows that if he doesn't win this battle, he'll become of the the creatures he loathes.
"Kros is THE story we've been wanting to tell! Neither of us are afraid of the dark or taking you there with us! Kros: Hallowed Ground isn't only about the war between North and South—to a vampire, you're all part of the feast!” says writer John Ostrander. “Kros has been waiting in the wings for far too long. War is hell--war can also be a nightmare. War is always a horror story and we have a hell of a story to tell.”

Artist Tom Mandrake recently traveled to Gettysburg to sketch the battlefields. He added “Many who have visited Gettysburg will swear they have seen a soldier standing on those battlefields. There is a haunting atmosphere there. Ghosts still walk.”
Kros: Hallowed Ground pulls inspiration from John Carpenter's The Thing and stories like Ambrose Bierce's Occurrence at Owl Creek. The creative team turned to Kickstarter as this is a book that is not often seen in mainstream comics. It's a tale of supernatural obsession, the horror of war, and of the monster lurking within humankind. With a tagline like that, how can you not be interested?
The Kickstarter campaign is currently live and runs through July 30th, 2015. At the time of this writing, it's a little more than halfway to its goal of $49,534. Rewards include the book itself, sketchbooks, prints, and original artwork not just from Kros, but from some of Mandrake's work from DC Comics.
