Universal Cable Productions is quickly becoming a geek's favorite studio.  Not only has it optioned Night Mary by Rick Remender and Five Ghosts from Frank Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham, but it just signed a first-look deal with Dark Horse Comics.  Oh, and there are already a few properties in development!  I love the current era of television.

This new deal will focus on developing and producing scripted programming from Dark Horse's extensive library in addition to new material.  Initial discussions began at Comic Con last year with the publisher introduced UCP executives to some of its top writers and artists.  The projects in development have direct involvement from the comic creators too.

Let's talk about those for a sec.  There are four Dark Horse titles currently in the works for the small screen:

Harrow County – The recent series from Cullen Bunn and Tyler Crook that is absolutely terrifying.  Issue #3 just came out this week.  The book follows a young girl who has always known that the deep, dark woods surrounding her home was filled with ghosts, goblins, and the restless dead.  On the eve of her 18th birthday, she learns that she's connected to these creatures and the land itself in a way she never imagined.  She just happens to be the reincarnation of a powerful witch that the local townsfolk put to death the day Emmy was born.  I cannot stress how scary and unsettling this comic is so I love that it's getting the TV treatment.

The Umbrella Academy – I haven't read this book just yet.  This one is created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba.  It picks up nine years after the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes have parted ways.  Now they must work together to save the world.  Bluegrass films is attached to executive produce.

Back Up – Based on a feature script by Tom Vaughn, this is a story set in the near future where technology allows people to back themselves up in the same way we back up computers today.  Instead of protecting against drive failure, these backups protect against death.  This sounds a bit like the recent comic Arcadia over at BOOM! Studios.  Kenny Golde is set to write and executive produce.  Brad Anderson is in negotiations to direct and Jim Wedaa is also attached to executive produce.

Concrete – Another title I haven't read just yet.  This one is from Paul Chadwick and follows a man named Ronald Lithgow after his subconscious is transplanted into a hulking stone body.  Now he must come to terms with his new form and try to life a normal life.

“Dark Horse Entertainment has an incredible roster of fantastical, witty and mind bending stories,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President of Development, Universal Cable Productions. “Their brand has conquered multiple media platforms and boasts iconic books that have attracted the highest level of writers.  It’s going to be a wild and imaginative ride.”

More genre TV is good for everyone.  I can't wait to see what some of these will look like when they come about.  The possibilities for this deal are endless as Dark Horse has a huge back catalog with a ton of great titles.
