The Returning Embraces Near-Death Experiences

BOOM! Studios has announced a new four-issue mini-series entitled The Returning, set to put a new twist on near-death experiences.  Written by Jason Starr and illustrated by Andrea Mutti, the publisher calls the comic “part Carrie, part Hellblazer, part Crossed, and steeped in mystery.”  The Returning is set in the near future where some people who have had near-death experiences (NDEs) have come back “changed.”  They have extreme behavioral changes, become increasingly paranoid and violent, and no one knows why.  The people that have experienced an NDE are immediately under suspicion and in some cases are murdered by justice-seeking vigilantes.  Beth, a quiet high school student with her whole life ahead of her is about to learn just how quickly the world can turn against you when she makes it out of her worst night alive.

“Jason and Andrea have crafted a smart, beautifully drawn thriller in The Returning,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “It’s dark, intense, and sets up a compelling mystery around near-death experiences. I’ve been a fan of Jason Starr for years, ever since I read his novels from Hard Case Crime. He and Andrea Mutti are terrific storytellers, and if you’re not already a fan of their work, I think you will be by the end of this series.”

The Returning sounds a bit like Revival from Mike Norton and Tim Seely over at Image Comics, but more violent.  I've dug Jason Starr's work in the Hard Case Crime series so I'm interested to see how this develops.

The first issue of The Returning is set to debut on March 12th, retailing for $3.99.  It will feature two covers, one by Frazer Irving and another by series artist Andrea Mutti.
