Buffy Spinoff CoverThe ever-expanding Whedonverse just got a little bigger.  Dark Horse Comics has announced two new mini-series set in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  The first, due out this summer,  centers around everyone's favorite vampire, Spike.  Written by Victor Gischler, whose recent work includes having the X-Men battle vampires and drawn by Paul Lee, who is no stranger to Buffy, the comic focuses on the bleach-blonde blood sucker as he hops in his bug ship and heads off world.  There's too much frustration planetside for him so instead of writing out his angst on LiveJournal or in an emo song, he goes into space. Spike winds up involved in a demonic plot designed to take advantage of the current absence of magic on Earth.

“Getting my hands on the characters I’ve loved so much over the years is a dream come true,” said Gischler.

I just hope they finally explain what's up with the giant cockroaches that Spike has been hanging out with since last season.  He just showed up in a steampunk style spaceship with a crew of bugs and no one gave it a second glance.

Spike #1 hits shelves on August 22nd, 2012.

That's not all, Buffy fans.  Spike isn't the only one getting a mini-series this year.  The resident redhead of the Scooby Gang is getting one too.  Willow is on a journey to bring magic back to the world and it's become an obsession.  Nothing will stop her from recovering her mojo.  As we've seen in Season 8, Willow will go to great lengths for things she believes in.  This includes some shady alliances and travel to another dimension.

The mini-series will be written by Jeff Parker and drawn by Brian Ching.  You can expect the first issue on November 21st, 2012.

I've been torn with the current season of Buffy.  I'm loving Angel & Faith, but the main book just doesn't feel right.  I welcome some new stories though, especially with the characters involved.  When Willow set out on her own a few months back, I knew something big would come of it.  I just didn't think it would take this long to get there.  I love the preview shot (below) for the book.  It reminds me a lot of Sandman.

What do you think of these new spinoffs?  Which one are you most excited about?
