NYCC 2017: IDW PUBLISHING ANNOUNCES MORE GOOSEBUMPS
In speaking with dozens of creators on the Funny Book Splatter podcast, R.L. Steine's Goosebumps comes up frequently. It was a seminal work that influenced an entire generation of horror creators. IDW Publishing, in association with Scholastic, is preparing to release Goosebumps comics beginning on October 25th. The publisher has announced a new batch of Goosebumps comics before those even hit the stands.
The second three-issue arc, “Download and Die!” is a brand-new self-contained story from writer Jen Vaughn and artist Michelle Wong. It's a spiritual successor to the classic Goosebumps tale “Say Cheese and Die!” taking the original concept and putting a digital spin on it. Kids today don't know what film is so now it's all about their smartphones. The story features a smartphone app that takes filtered photos with nightmarish outcomes.
“This Goosebumps tale is going to delve into what makes friends tick and what can drive them apart.” said Vaughn. “What's that saying, 'you can always make new friends?' Well, not when people find out what you did to your last ones. Michelle brought my characters to life so well...too well.” They laugh, they cry, they dream, and bleed through the power of her lines. I'm terrified to read the comic now.”
“Creepy stories are my favorite, and Jen is making this one so much fun to work with.” said Wong. “I love drawing cute characters, and I love drawing monsters – It's a dream come true.”
“Download and Die” will be launching in February, following the debut Goosebumps comic, “Monsters at Midnight.”
