The Tower Chronicles CoverNot content with delivering blockbuster films such as The Dark Knight and the upcoming Pacific Rim, Legendary Entertainment has announced an expansion to their comic book line with a slew of new titles.  Previously their funny books were limited to Frank Miller's Holy Terror which was...well, a little racist.  Think Batman if he hated Muslims.  Anyway, three new titles were announced at San Diego Comic Con a few weeks back and there's some impressive talent backing them up.

First up is The Majestic Files.  This is written by J. Michael Straczynski (Rising Stars, Amazing Spider-Man) with art by Geoff Shaw and inks from Matt Banning.  Little has been released about this project but the creators seem pretty excited about it.  Judging from the preview art, it's an alien story.  The Majestic Files is due out in 2013.

Also announced at SDCC was Shadow Walk.  This graphic novel was created by Thomas Tull and Max Brooks (The Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z).  Mark Waid (Irredeemable, Daredevil) will be handling writing duties with Shane Davis on art.  Shadow Walk takes that old adage "As I walk through the valley in the shadow of death" and makes it a real place.  Here's the official synopsis:

"As I Walk Through The Valley In The Shadow of Death."  Is the Shadow of Death a metaphor or could it be a real place? Three separate incidents – in 1914, 1948, and 1968 – in a valley near modern day Iraq seem to give credence to those who believe it is a real place. In each incident, all occurring during a time of war, a group of soldiers disappears and is never heard from again. Satellite photos over the Valley displays images that seem to defy the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Firsthand accounts and video – previously never before having seen the light of day - from all three incidents portray remarkably consistent tales of men being mutilated and god awful shrieking that could only be from a demon or monster.

Now, two weeks ago, another photo taken over the area hints at some kind of new energy source. A small group of Special-Ops soldiers is sent into the Valley with two props – the skull of John the Baptist and a shard from the actual cross on which Jesus was crucified. Led by John Raines, an efficient killer with a strong code of ethics who has been rotting in Guantanamo for allegedly killing his entire platoon when he was dispatched into the Valley six months ago, they head into battle against a whole roster of creatures.  Now they will find out once and for all if the road to Hell has just opened up.

This sounds like a version of the Dirty Dozen on a mission from God.  It also sounds really cool.  Waid just won a ton of awards for his work on Daredevil, so he's riding hot.  I'm anxious to see what he can do with Shadow Walk.  This graphic novel is also due out in 2013.

Finally we have The Tower Chronicles.  This is actually a trilogy with the first chapter of Book One scheduled for release this September.  The comic follows John Tower, a supernatural bounty hunter with a dark past that haunts him every day.  The Tower Chronicles is written by Matt Wagner (Grendal) and illustrated by Simon Bisley (The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse).  Bisley's art is amazing so I'll be checking this out for that alone.  The comic will also feature cover artwork from the likes of Jim Lee and Alex Ross.  Legendary has provided a 12 page preview of the first book that you can check out here.

With books like these, Legendary is set to make a big splash in the world of comics.  Which of these new comics are you most excited about?
