Judge Dredd CoverIDW Publishing recently announced a partnership with 2000 AD, the publisher behind Judge Dredd.  At San Diego Comic Con this week they followed up that announcement with a new one at the panel celebrating the 35th anniversary of the character.  Duane Swierczynski will pen a new Judge Dredd comic, drawn by Nelson Daniel.

IDW's Chief Creative Officer, Chris Ryall explained that while Daniel will be the main artist on the book, each issue will include back-up stories that tie in to the overall story, illustrated by artists such as Paul Gulacy and Jim Starlin.  As IDW is a big fan of variant covers, Judge Dredd will feature several, including ones drawn by Ashley WOod, Carlos Ezquerra, Zach Howard, and Whilce Portacio.

Judge Dredd was originally created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra for the British anthology magazine 2000 AD.  Since then, he's had a long history as an iconic comic character bringing law and order to Mega City One.  He's not up there with James Bond and Sherlock Holmes in the British hall of fictional characters, but he can probably take them both on in a fight.

“I discovered Judge Dredd at the tender age of 15 through a somewhat unlikely source: a bootleg Commodore 64 game where you move Dredd through a digital Mega City One and pretty much shoot everything in sight. Jonesing for more, I realized that Dredd was a UK import, and super-tough to find here in the U.S. Over the next 25 years, I snapped up all the Dredd stories that I could, savoring them like exotic treats smuggled through customs,” Swierczynski said. “When IDW announced an American version a while back, I was over the moon -- never even thinking that I would be approached to write this new version. Needless to say, this is the opportunity of lifetime, and I couldn't be more thrilled. The 15-year-old in me may never recover.”

My only real exposure to Judge Dredd was that awful Stallone movie from a few years back.  With the upcoming reboot in September and this new series in November, I'm excited to see more of the character.  What do you think of this Judge Dredd news?  Are you ready for some law in your life?
