JUDGE DREDD: AMERICA FINALLY COMES TO NORTH AMERICA

Despite reading hundreds of comics a month, there are still a few characters in the funny book industry that I'm not all that familiar with.  Judge Dredd is one of them.  Sure, I know the basic concept and I've seen the most recent movie (we don't talk about the Stallone one), but I don't know much about what goes on in Mega-City One.  Fortunately, I've just found the perfect jumping on point, thanks to 2000 AD.  The publisher has announced that Judge Dredd: America will be released in North America for the first time on August 11th.

From what I understand, Judge Dredd: America serves as a great introduction to the character.  It requires no previous knowledge of the series.  There are no crossovers and no tie-in issues.  It's just good old-fashioned storytelling from writer John Wagner and artist Colin MacNeil.  Here's the write up on the book from 2000 AD.

Mega-City One’s Judges enforce the rigid rule of law, acting as judge, jury, and executioner – but how do the citizens really feel about a system in which they are powerless? America Jara and Bennett Beeny grow up as best friends, living a fairly trouble-free life in a dangerous city... bar the odd unpleasant encounter with a Judge. Time draws them apart, and when they are brought back together, Beeny has become a successful singer and America has become involved with a terrorist organisation with the Judges in its sights.

I'll definitely be checking this one out, if for nothing else than to give me an example of what to expect from Judge Dredd.  What about you?
