IMAGE COMICS ANNOUNCES A WHOLE BUNCH OF GRAPHIC NOVELS

Image Comics is certainly no slouch when it comes to the robust titles in its roster.  In the next few months, some of the newest comics will be getting their first trade paperbacks.  There are books for all different genres from a variety of creators so I'm certain you'll find something you'll enjoy.  Check out the current list below and let me know what you'll be picking up in the comments.

First up is a bit of a cheat as it's not a trade paperback, but a hardcover collection.  Five Ghosts from writer Frank J. Barbiere and artists Chris Mooneyham and Lauren Affe will be packaged in a deluxe hardcover that collects the first twelve issues of the series, plus tons of bonus content later this month (and in book stores in July).  Five Ghosts is an incredible pulp adventure comic focuses on a strange artifact called “The Dreamstone” that has caused infamous treasure hunter Fabian Gray to become possessed by five literary ghosts, granting him their unique abilities.  The comic follows Gray and his allies as they travel across the world fighting others that have encountered The Dreamstone.

Five Ghosts was one of my top ten horror comics of 2014 and for good reason.  If you haven't checked out the series yet, this is an excellent way to dive in.  Now is the time too as the comic is currently in development at SyFy.  The Five Ghosts Deluxe Edition: Volume 1 hardcover will be released in comic book stores on June 24th and book stores on July 7th.  It will retail for $34.99.

Rasputin 00

From period pulp adventure to historical fantasy, we next turn our attention to Russia with Rasputin: Volume 1.  Written by Alex Grecian and illustrated by Riley Rossmo (who is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists), the book puts a new twist on the tale of the infamous monk.  In one night Rasputin was poisoned, beaten, stabbed, shot in the head, and drowned, then tied up and thrown in a frozen river.  Why is it so hard to kill him?  This is a supernatural reimagining of the “mad monk.”

I'm a little behind on this series, but the first couple issues I read were really cool.  It's an interesting take on a historical figure I didn't know much about.  Rasputin: Volume 1 collects the first five issues of the series and will retail for the Image First price of $9.99.  It will be available in comic book stores on June 24th and in bookstores on July 7th.

Autumnlands 00

Staying on the fantasy bandwagon, we shift towards some hardcore magic in The Autumnlands: Tooth & Claw, set to get its first trade in July.  The comic is written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Benjamin Dewey, featuring a group of anthropomorphic animal wizards as they summon a legendary champion through time in an effort to save the world.  Of course, nothing works out the way they planned.  I blame the panda.

The Autumnlands is an absolutely gorgeous book and it's definitely something that any fans of the fantasy genre should check out.  It is a mature title though because there's totally a naked dude in there so please don't look at the animals and think it's OK to buy it for a little kid.  The first volume will be collect the first six issues of the series and like Rasputin, will retail for $9.99.  That's a great price for the amount of content.  This will be available in comic book stores on July 1st and bookstores on July 14th.

Reyn 00

Sticking with fantasy for a moment, we also have the first volume of Reyn coming just next week.  The comic is written by Kel Symons and illustrated by Nathan Stockman, following the title character who works as a freelance swordsman and monster-hunter.  He's the last of the legendary “Wardens” but not necessarily a white knight.  Haunted by visions of his “guiding angel” Aurora, Reyn sets out on a quest against the mysterious Venn, teaming up with a woman with witch-like powers named Seph.  Together they find that the land of Fate holds an incredible secret.

You can pick up Reyn: Volume 1 at your local comic shop on June 17th and in bookstores on June 30th.  It collects the first five issues of the series and will set you back...wait for it...$9.99.

Drifter 00

Now we turn our attention to the stars to perhaps the best current sci-fi western series, Drifter.  Written by Ivan Brandon and illustrated by Nic Klein, the book follows Abram Pollux after he crash lands on Ouro, a lawless backwater planet, only to end up on the wrong end of a bullet.  The book packs a punch as Pollux looks for answers through the ruins of this forgotten world.  If he can't find answers, he'll settle for revenge.

I can't say enough how beautiful Drifter is.  Nic Klein does a bang up job on this title and it's got a hook at the end of the first chapter that will pull you in.  The first volume will collect the first five issues and will retail for...you guessed it, $9.99.  Look for it in comic book stores on June 17th and in book stores on June 30th.

Postal 00

Bouncing back to Earth, we've got the first volume of Top Cow's Postal showcasing the strange town of Eden, Wyoming, where the first official murder in 25 years has just occurred.  The town is different because it's a haven for fugitive criminals who remain there while new identities are created for them.  There's a zero tolerance policy when it comes to illegal activity that might draw the attention of the man.  Writers Matt Hawkins and Bryan Hill and artist Isaac Goodhart bring a suspenseful horror thriller set in rural America.

Postal: Volume 1 collects the first four issues of the series, retailing for...drum roll...$9.99.  How'd you guess?  You can pick it up at your local comic book store on June 24th or in bookstores on July 7th.

Theyre Not Like Us 00

Finally, we've got one of the most unsettling comics I've read in recent years in They're Not Like Us.  Writer Eric Stephenson and artist Simon Gane join forces to deliver this creepy story about a young woman named Syd with telepathic abilities and her strange new friends...and enemies.  She's welcomed into a beautiful house by others with similar powers but this is not the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.  It's filled with questionable motives, mysterious origins, and even more suspect morals.  OK, it's exactly like the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.  As Syd gets deeper and deeper into this group, she finds secrets that are each more disturbing than the last.

This is a great modern day horror tale and puts a unique spin on the super powered mythos.  There are no capes or tights.  This is a realistic portrayal of what might happen if these people showed up one day.  They're Not Like Us: Volume 1 collects the first six issues retailing for, I can't even act surprised anymore...$9.99.  It will be available in comic book stores on July 8th and in bookstores on July 21st.

East of West, the sci-fi western take on the apocalypse is getting an oversized prestige hardcover in July.  Written by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Nick Dragotta, the series is a pretty crazy spin on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.  The blend of genres is intriguing and full of possibilities.  This hardcover collects the first fifteen issues of the comic, representing The First Year of The Apocalypse.  It will also include over 50 pages of bonus material, the full script for issue #1, and never-before-seen concept art.

East of West: The Apocalypse, Year One will be available in comic book stores on July 8th and in bookstores on July 21st.  This oversized hardcover will retail for $49.99.

Finally...for real this time, we've got a reprinting of Four Eyes in anticipation of the second story arc from Man of Action Entertainment.  This newly remastered edition of the first volume of the Young Adult fantasy series from writer Joe Kelly and artist Max Fiumara is set to debut in July.  Four Eyes follows Enrico, a boy living in an alternate version of 1930s New York where dragon fighting is the city's number one underground sport and the cause of his father's untimely death.  His trial-by-fire (HAR! HAR!) begins here.

Four Eyes: Volume 1 - Forged in Flame collects the first four issues of the original series.  It will be available in comic book stores on July 8th and in bookstores on July 21st.  As with the other paperbacks mentioned in this post, it will retail for $9.99.
