FRANKENSTEIN, ALIVE, ALIVE RETURNS IN JANUARY
Frankenstein’s monster has been popping up in a ton of comics lately with a number of creators clamoring to tell the further tales of Mary Shelley’s creature. One title that began a few years back was Frankenstein, Alive, Alive from IDW Publishing. Written by Steve Niles and brilliantly illustrated by the late Bernie Wrightson, the series only ran three issues and was never completed…until now. The publisher has announced the fourth and final issue will be released in January 2018.
But what about Wrightson’s work? That’s a great question. Before his death, Wrightson had completed several pages and laid out the entire fourth issue. Artist Kelley Jones, a lifelong Wrightson devotee, will step in to finish the book using Wrightson’s layouts.
“Bernie was more than a brilliant artist and collaborator to me,” said writer Niles, “he was a dear friend. I am so happy to see this final issue finished by Kelley, an artist whose work Bernie greatly respected.”
"When Bernie realized he wouldn't be able to complete the series we began discussing his options, and his first choice was to have Kelley jump in,” said Liz Wrightson. "Bernie felt that Kelley's style would mesh with his own seamlessly, and it was important to him that the arc be finished and that all four issues form a visually coherent whole. He'd have been so gratified to see this issue published at last."
"Finishing Bernie’s work is like having a last, wonderful conversation with him,” added Jones. “Thank God it will be about Frankenstein, something we both love so much.”
I absolutely loved the previous issues of Frankenstein Alive, Alive so I’m eager to see how the series concludes. To catch readers up on the series, IDW Publishing will be releasing a 3-in-1 issue collecting the first three issues two weeks before the release of the final chapter.
