Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Comics On the Way
San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) hasn't even started yet and the announcements are already pouring in. BOOM! Studios has been rolling out an announcement every weekday beginning on July 1st (except for the 4th, USA! USA!). This one is perfectly timed. Beginning in November, the publisher will release a limited series tying into Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the new film debuting this weekend.
BOOM! Studios has partnered with Twentieth Century Consumer Products to release a six issue mini-series that bridges the gap between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn. Written by Michael Moreci, the comic will showcase the fall of humanity and the rise of Caesar's ape civilization. Although the apes have not yet advanced as a species, Caesar must find a way to unify them to one cause. On the other side of the country Malcolm (played by Jason Clarke in the film) must head out into the decaying country with his family to find a cure for the plague that is slowly killing his wife, Rita.
“Our Planet of the Apes comics stand out to me as some of our best work," said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. "This series marks the first time we’ve ventured into producing print comics based on the new films, and we can't wait to explore this world. The new films are so good—we're honored to add to the mythology.”
In addition to the new mini-series, BOOM! Studios and Twentieth Century Consumer Products will debut Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Contagion, a one-shot comic prequel to the new film at SDCC. The book is written by Caleb Monroe and illustrated by Tom Derenick. It features a cover by Garry Brown and follows Ellie (played by Keri Russell in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as she struggles to find a cure for the pandemic affecting humanity before it can claim her daughter's life. The issue will retail for $5.00 and will be available to purchase exclusively at SDCC at the BOOM! Studios booth #2229. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: Contagion marks the first time that BOOM! Studios has ever exclusively debuted a brand-new comic at a convention.
There's no word yet as to who the interior artist will be for the mini-series, but if it's written by Moreci, I'm in. Hell, I was in when I heard there was going to be more POTA comics. I love me some monkey action and BOOM! can deliver it in spades. The first issue of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be available in November with the main cover illustrated by Christopher Mitten and a retailer incentive cover by Jay Shaw. It will retail for $3.99.
