Image Comics is making good on the deal the publisher has put together with Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The creative team's new series The Fade Out has been kicking all sorts of ass and now the attention is turning to the back catalog, specifically Criminal. This was a fantastic series that Brubaker and Phillips had originally released through Marvel's Icon imprint. Image Comics has announced a reprint of the first trade paperback, Coward, as well as a new one-shot, both set to debut in January 2015.

The new 48-page one-shot will be available in a standard version and a special Savage Edition that's magazine-sized. It's set in 1976 where Teeg Lawless is doing 30 days in county jail with a price on his head. His only safe company from the savagery is a beat-up old comic magazine that his dead cellmate left behind. This is a comic within a comic filled with slick '70s thrills.

"We've been planning the return of Criminal for the past year, and I couldn't let the launch go by without returning to our underworld for a new story," said Brubaker. "With Fatale and The Fade Out, we've been hearing from a lot of new readers, so it couldn't be a better time to get the thing we're most known for back on the shelves."

Criminal was my first exposure to the team of Brubaker and Phillips.  The essays in the back of the issues opened my eyes to so many great books and movies, not to mention that the story was great, filled with pulp goodness.  I missed the last batch of issues so I'm hoping that Image continues to reprint this material so I can catch up.  If you haven't read these yet, you are in for a treat.

The Criminal one-shot will be available on January 28th in both standard and savage editions. Criminal: Volume 1 – Coward will also be available on January 28th.
