BUFFY GOES BACK TO HIGH SCHOOL
This June, when most students are finishing up their school year and heading into their summer vacation, Buffy Summers will be doing the opposite. Dark Horse Comics is set to release an original graphic novel aimed at young adults called Buffy: The High School Years – Freaks and Geeks. The 80 pages book is written by Faith Erin Hicks, illustrated by Yishan Li, and colored by Rod Espinosa. It's set during season 1 of the TV show with the title character just moving to Sunnydale. The publisher has recently announced the next OGN in the series, entitled Glutton for Punishment, set for release in October. Yishan Li is onboard once again to draw the book, with Kel McDonald taking over writing duties.
Glutton for Punishment picks up with Buffy and Xander signing up for home ec, figuring it will be an extra-credit cakewalk. It turns out the teacher is a ravenous tiger demon in disguise, kidnapping his top students and forcing them to cook for him. When Xander claims some store-bought treats are his own creations, he becomes the demon's next victim. Now, Buffy must not only keep her grades up, but she must also rescue her friends and fellow students.
I love that Dark Horse is going back to give us more early Buffy. The first season was rather brief and the actors were just defining their roles before they hit their stride. These original graphic novels can fill in some backstory and show us some more adventures of this timeframe, while introduces the characters to a whole new set of fans.
Buffy: The High School Years – Glutton for Punishment is set for release on October 19th, 2016.
