BOOK OF DEATH DETAILS ANNOUNCED
A couple weeks ago, Valiant Entertainment released a teaser image for Book of Death, its next event book with the ominous words “So let it be written. So let it be done.” featuring a number of prominent characters in pain with the Angel of Death looming above. The publisher has since shared some details on the upcoming comic and things look pretty grim.
Written by Robert Venditti and Robert Gill, with art from Doug Braithwaite, the four-issue Book of Death kicks off in July and continues through the summer coinciding with four stand-alone one-shots featuring work from Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Trevor Hairsine, Joshua Dysart, Kano, and Clayton Henry. The series picks up as a new Geomancer emerges to build a bridge to the future of the Valiant Universe. The publisher released the following foreboding words.

The Valiant heroes. X-O Manowar. Bloodshot. Ninjak. The Harbinger Renegades. Unity. This is how they lived. This is how they died.
Now we know. The Book of the Geomancer has recorded it all. But only a young girl – the last in a line of the enigmatic mystics who protect the Earth known as Geomancers – has seen this future come to pass, from the coming cataclysm to the dawn of the 41st century. Alone with her sworn protector, the Eternal Warrior – a soldier battle-forged across five thousand years of combat – the duo must defy their allies to stop the Dark Age that now threatens to eclipse our world.
Together, they are the number one target of every hero and villain on Earth. Either the Eternal Warrior hands her over…or they take him down. But can even he single-handedly protect one child when the entire Valiant Universe wages war against him?

"In the tradition of Valiant's original Rai #0, Book of Death is going to reveal glimpses of the future of the Valiant Universe and, with it, many of the monumental events and occurrences that our heroes will face," said Valiant CEO & Chief Creative Officer Dinesh Shamdasani. "Major characters will die, while others will be introduced for the very first time. The loves, the losses, and the betrayals that await our biggest characters…it all starts here. For the Geomancer, this future has already happened and, in each issue, we will see more of the events that shaped her life revealed. Book of Death will have an immediate impact on not only the stories that follow it in 2015, but on the next decade of the Valiant Universe as well."
I have yet to read a bad Valiant comic since the publisher relaunched a few years ago. The creators have been building a vast universe that can easily stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Marvel and DC. Book of Death sounds like it could shuffle the cards a bit, playing with the lives of some fan-favorite characters. Valiant knows how to create an effective event without spinning into countless tie-ins and unnecessary fluff. This is a pretty self-contained storyline. You can pick up the main four-issue mini-series and get the story, but if you want some more, there are only four more issues to pick up and you have the complete tale.
