BLACK MAGICK STARTS NEXT WEEK

From time to time I misplace press releases and don't get to write about a new book that's on its way to your local comic shop.  Fortunately sometimes I catch it at just the right time which is the case with Black Magick, the new paranormal noir series set to debut next week from writer Greg Rucka and artist Nicola Scott from Image Comics.

Black Magick is an ongoing series about legacy, destiny, redemption, and the price of magic.  It follows Detective Rowan Black who works in robbery / homicide for the Portsmouth PD.  Her greatest mystery is the truth about herself, both who she has been and who she will become.  There are others in Rowan's world with very long memories, and the power that one person holds, another will always covet.  All of that sounds a little vague, but I was honestly sold on the book by the creative team alone. Rucka knows a thing or two about writing compelling female characters and Scott's artwork is tremendous.   Throwing in the description of “paranormal noir” is just icing on the cake.

“Nic and I have been living with Rowan for so long, now, working on this series in some way, shape, or form for years, and to see it become manifest, to finally share it with others, that’s both exciting and, honestly, a little nerve-wracking,” said Rucka. “Rowan’s one of the most complicated people I’ve ever tried to bring to life on the page. She’s got some very rough edges, some very sharp corners, and in many ways she is her own worst enemy. But for all that, her story is one that both Nic and I are genuinely passionate about telling, and I think that shines through on every page.”

Black Magick #1 is set for release on October 28th and promises to be steeped in mystery, suspense, the many myths of witchcraft, and Wiccan tradition.  Each issue will also feature an all-new work of original fiction from Greg Rucka.  The first issue features a variant cover by Jill Thompson as well as a magazine-size variant by Rich Burchett.
