BATMAN: THE KILLING JOKE DETAILS REVEALED
Ask any comic fan to rank the all-time best Batman stories, and The Killing Joke will easily be near the top of the list. The 1988 one-shot, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Brian Bolland, changed the landscape of Batman comics for decades. It featured an origin for the Joker in flashback while the man commits some heinous acts in the present against Commissioner Gordon and his daughter, Barbara (aka Batgirl). You can imagine my, and the collective comic book industry's reaction when Warner Bros. announced that the comic would be adapted into a feature-length animated film.
That's not all to rejoice about though. Not only is The Killing Joke getting the animated treatment, but it will be R-rated so no punches will have to be pulled. Bruce Timm is onboard as an executive producer and Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill have returned to their stellar roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.
Batman: The Killing Joke will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on August 2nd and Digital HD on July 26th. The Blu-ray Combo Pack version also includes a digital copy of the film. There's also a limited edition deluxe edition that includes the Combo Pack and an exclusive Joker figurine.
“Batman: The Killing Joke presents one of the most compelling stories in the annals of Batman’s adventures: the evolution of The Joker from normalcy to criminal insanity. This was a very challenging story to tell because of the intense, often disturbing storyline, but we are extremely pleased with how true to the graphic novel we have been in this original film.” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Vice President, Family & Animation Marketing. “Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is proud to release Batman: The Killing Joke as an authentic representation of its revered story for both longtime fans and new fans alike.”
Joining Conroy and Hamill among the cast are Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon and Ray Wise as Commissioner Gordon. Batman: The Killing Joke is directed by Sam Liu and written by Brian Azzarello. Bruce Timm and Sam Register are executive producers, and Alan Burnett is co-producer. Benjamin Melniker & Michael Uslan are executive producers.
Special features on the DVD version are non-existent aside from a sneak peek at the next DC Universe original movie. The Blu-ray is where the action is with a pair of featurettes that I can't wait to check out along with two classic episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (which I already have on DVD, but whatever). This movie will sit proudly on my shelf in my office, which just so happens to have a framed poster of the cover of The Killing Joke on the door.
