ABBOTT BRINGS SUPERNATURAL CRIME TO THE 1970S

As revealed during the BOOM! Studios panel at New York Comic Con, the publisher will be releasing a new supernatural crime thriller called Abbott beginning in January 2018. Written by Saladin Ahmed and illustrated by Sami Kivela, the comic follows the title character, a female journalist of color in 1970s Detroit who investigates a series of grisly crimes the police have ignored. She recognizes the work of a dark magical force, the same one that murdered her husband ten years ago. Her invesigation puts her in the crosshairs of a mysterious power out for more blood.

“Abbott is a brilliant, tenacious reporter covering everything from organized crime to police brutality, but she's a shell of her former self,” says Ahmed. “She knows she won't be whole until she unravels the mystery of her husband's murder.”

This is Ahmed's first creator-owned series. He's also currently writing Black Bolt for Marvel, which I'm told is very good. Kivela's artwork is out of this world and he recently delivered some of the best work I've ever seen on Beautiful Canvas. I cannot wait to see what he does with this book.

"A cast of hippie wizards, black revolutionaries, and cranky newsmen also appear in Abbott, but the real co-star of the book is the city of Detroit," says Ahmed. "Set in 1972—the year Nixon was re-elected and Motown Records left for Los Angeles—Abbot takes place against a backdrop of white flight and black renaissance in Detroit."

“I’m very excited to bring Abbott and her world alive,” says Kivelä. “She’s a fascinating character, and I can’t wait for people to explore ’70s Detroit and its shadowy secrets with her.”

Abbott #1 features a main cover by Taj Tenfold and a variant cover by Micaela Dawn. It is scheduled for release in January 2018.
