SAINTS MIXES HEAVY METAL, SEX, AND THE OCCULT IN OCTOBER
There are some comics out there that just by referencing them in discussion, you will peak my interest. Preacher is probably at the top of that list. You can imagine how intrigued I am after hearing the upcoming crime-horror comic Saints being described with “Dexter-style action collides with a Preacher-esque sensibility.” I'm in. The ongoing series, written by Sean Lewis and illustrated by Benjamin Mackey, debuts in October from Image Comics.
Saints follows Blaise, Lucy, and Sebastian, as they find a Holy War erupting around them. It turns out that they're the next generation of Saints, poised to fight for a heaven that God has abandoned. You can see how the book can be compared to Preacher there. I'm definitely interested.
“I was drawn in the moment Ben pitched the idea to me: 'What if the Patron Saints returned to earth and their martyrdom became their superpower,” said Lewis. “I had gone to Catholic school, I'm first generation Irish-American, really deep in religious guilt—I thought it was brilliant. It's been the most fun I've had writing something because it deals with things I'm really interested in. Deep things like what people believe in and why, but also funny and frivolous things like heavy metal. The book is thoughtful, for sure, but also insanely funny. Kind of like a Dogma on steroids. That's what makes it a joy."
Mackey added: “In Saints, you have these characters, housing the souls of revered religious martyrs, that still need to eat, sleep, drink, and figure out what the hell is going on in their lives. I want to capture this balance of the contemporary mundanity with a classical sense of the monumental. Drawing on inspiration from John Singer Sargent, Giambattista Tiepolo, David Lynch, 19 Kids and Counting, Eastern Orthodox Icons, and Slipknot… I hope to create a visual milieu that although clean and simple on surface, houses a much more tumultuous interior life.”
