Creating a rollercoaster ride of looming threat and a sense of heart wrenching terror, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Blade II, Hellboy 1 &2) presents Mama, a startling paranormal thriller starring Academy Award® nominated Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty, The Help) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Oblivion), in thegripping tale of two little girls who disappear on the day that their mother is murdered.
Alone and lost for five years deep within the woods, the sisters are unexplainably discovered alive in a decrepit cabin, in a search funded by their uncle, Lucas (Coster-Waldau). With the help of his punk rock girlfriend, Annabel (Chastain), the now ten-year-old, Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and five-year-old Lilly (Isabelle Nélisse), are brought back to civilisation. Emaciated and walking on all fours the girls are completely feral and a fascinating case study for child psychologist Dr Dreyfuss (Daniel Kash).
"The Girls Arrive"
Lucas, determined to give the girls a good life despite his girlfriend’s hesitancy for an immediate family, moves all four of them into a suburban house to allow the girls to be studied by Dr Dreyfuss whilst they adjust to society. However, it soon becomes clear all is not what it seems, and the new family may not be the only ones living in the new house.
A suspicious accident involving Lucas temporarily leaves Annabel with sole care of the girls, but as she takes on the challenge to introduce them to a normal life, she slowly realises something isn’t quite right. Are the sisters experiencing post-traumatic stress, or is something extraordinary coming to visit them? Enter, Mama - the apparition that appears to have helped Victoria and Lily survive all those years in the woods. Unseen and untouchable Mama is determined to reach from beyond the grave to take care of the children she feels she has the right to be with. But with what consequence?
With a strong directorial debut from Andy Muschietti, alongside the critically acclaimed Guillermo del Toro, who took on the Executive Producer role after seeing Andy and sister Barbara’s short film of the same name in 2008, Mama is a spectacular supernatural thriller.
