Activision Publishing and Terminal Reality have announced that they're working on a brand new Walking Dead video game. Sure, that other Walking Dead video game from TellTale Games has been getting a lot of press and people seem to love it, but you know what it lacks? Gameplay. Activision knows a thing or two about releasing a hardcore first-person-shooter and that's just what this Walking Dead game will be all about.
If that was all it was, this would be a great announcement. I get to kill zombies in the Walking Dead world? I'm down. But this is San Diego Comic Con season. That's just the tip of the iceberg. You see, this game is based on the TV show on AMC, not the comics from Image (although the TV show is based on the comics, but you get what I mean). Anyway, this game centers on none other than Daryl mother-f-ing Dixon. Oh, and who's that helping him along? It's Merle! That's right. You get to shoot zombies with a crossbow as Daryl Dixon. Thank you, AMC. You clearly got my letters.
The walkers in the game will mimic those in the show, hunting you down by sight, sound, and smell. Each new area should be explored carefully. If you're spotted by just one zombie, a whole horde could be triggered. You'll have to decide whether to stay and fight or use stealth to avoid the undead. Daryl travels through the Georgia countryside looking for safety in a world that is anything but safe.
As with the show, resources are thin. You'll have to consider your food, ammo, and medical supplies in order to survive. You need to be smart, not just skillful. Throughout the game, Daryl comes into contact with numerous other characters that can help or hurt him in several different ways. You get to decide if they come with you.
This game sounds awesome. It's a bit like Dead Island with a splash of Assassin's Creed. I haven't played TellTale Games' Walking Dead series yet, for which I've been called an idiot, but I've heard nothing but great things about the story and voice acting. If Activision doesn't get Norman Reedus to voice Daryl, it'll be a damn shame.
The Walking Dead video game is scheduled for release in 2013 on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Windows PC.
What do you think of the upcoming FPS? Who do you think Daryl will encounter in his travels? Do you think you'll have to cover yourself in zombie parts to avoid detection?
