Movie:

While excavating for Indian artefacts prior to the construction of a casino in the desert Matt Fletcher (Casper Van Dien) discovers a 40ft tall mummy buried in the ground. Calling in experts to research why an Egyptian style mummy could be found in an American desert, people working at the site start to disappear. It becomes clear that this is no ordinary mummy, it's the half human son of Ammon the Destroyer, a fallen angel that escaped being destroyed by God in the great flood.

Coming to their rescue is a famous security expert who bears a strong resemblance to the fallen angel Ammon. Ammon soon reveals himself and starts off a chain of events bringing his son to life and only needs to consummate with Angela the structural engineer during an eclipse of the moon to start a new race of half human/angel giants! Will Fletcher save the world, Angela's cherry and his own butt? You'll have to check out The Fallen Ones to find out!

Review:

While my tone may be a little critical of the film, I actually had a good time watching The Fallen Ones. While Casper Van Dien has been in some circles called the new "Lorenzo Lamas" for all of the mediocre films he stars in, I find they serve their purpose. Hollywood needs good cheap fun films and Casper delivers those to us!

The Fallen Ones has a pretty decent cast, Robert Wagner and Geoffrey Lewis do stand up jobs in their roles. It would have been cool for Lewis's daughter to be in this one though... Tom Bosley does a great Judd Hirsch impression as the Rabbi Eli Schmidtt, I think he may have even out Hirsched Hirsch himself with the thick Yiddish accent. It's always great to see my buddy Irwin Keyes get work too!

The Fallen Ones is a made for TV film which means it does not deliver the goods when it comes to boobies... Which was really a shame when you check out the slave girls in the beginning of the movie. It does have some gory scenes in though from victims of the giant's appetite. The special effects are cheesy as well, there's a moderate amount of CGI especially near the end of the film.

For all of its drawbacks I'm going to recommend that you pick up The Fallen Ones just for the fun of it, sometime when you need mindless entertainment and can't decide what to choose at Blockbuster.

Video and Audio:

Presented in 1.77:1 anamorphic widescreen the picture is pretty decent. There's a few scenes with the camera pointed at Tom Bosley that look really grainy, other than that it's what you would expect from today's films.

The Fallen Ones has both Dolby 5.1 and 2.0 audio tracks. I listened to the 5.1 one and was a little less than impressed. While the front channels carried most of the action, the surround channels were almost nonexistent. Okay at best was my feeling about it.

Special Features:

Anchor Bay loads this DVD up with more extras than the title really deserves. There's a "making of" featurette, as well as ones on "creating the mummy" and the films "visual effects". There's commentary track with writer/director Kevin Van Hook, producer Karen Bailey, cinematographer Matt Steinauer and effects supervisor Chadd B. Cole. Also included is a "behind the scenes" still gallery, a "storyboard" gallery and for those who are really a glutton for punishment, the screenplay on DVD-ROM. Who could ask for anything more? Well not me, but indeed it is impressive! My rating 5/5
