Written by Peter West

DVD released by Elite Entertainment

Written and directed by Meir Zarchi

1978, Region 1 (NTSC), 100 minutes, Unrated

DVD released on December 17th, 2002

Starring:
Camille Keaton as Jennifer Hill
Eron Tabor as Johnny
Richard Pace as Matthew
Anthony Nichols as Stanley
Gunter Kleemann as Andy

Movie:

The movie's tagline says it all!

This woman has just cut, chopped, broken and burned five men beyond recognition... but no jury in America would ever convict her!

Jennifer Hill leaves the hustle and bustle of New York City to escape to Kent Connecticut to write her first novel. Upon arrival she is pleasantly greeted by several of the local young men. After a refreshing skinny dip in the nearby river Jennifer settles in and starts on her novel. While relaxing in her boat soaking up some rays, the once friendly local boys drag to boat to the edge of a swamp and commit some of the most hideous acts of barbaric rape!

Jennifer struggles as the rape continues without end. Finally making it back to the summer house she attempts to phone the police, however her torture continues as the rapists have followed her back to her home. Jennifer is raped again and violated horribly. Even Matthew the retarded delivery boy for the supermarket has his way with her!

Johnny the leader of the gang convinces Matthew to go back to the house and finish Jennifer off with a switchblade. The cowardly Matthew is unable to kill her and wets the blade with her blood instead! The boys celebrate, Johnny buying the beers for Andy and Stanley. Matthew gets a Hot Fudge Sundae for finishing off Jennifer!

However Jennifer is far from dead, she cleans off and shakes off her injuries and prepares to give these pigs the most horrific revenge possible! One by one Jennifer lures and kills her attackers in some of most satisfying acts of retalliation ever!

Review:

Critics (Siskel and Ebert to mention a couple) through the years have made a career of panning this movie! It has been called the sickest, most disgusting, sexist, disturbing movie ever made. I do admit that after viewing it as many times to write this review I have been desensitized a bit. I feel that the movie does not degrade women but shows how against all odds, a woman can overcome her tormentors and deal out justice with the vengence of a ark angel! This movie is a masterpiece of subtle cinematography, transparent sounds and tension that builds throughout the movie until it's stunning climax! Elite Entertainment once again has given us another winner. I can't wait for the next Millennium release!

My Overall Rating: 5/5

Video and Audio:

The movie was filmed in 35mm mostly with a handheld camera. This DVD is presented in a 1.85 THX Certified widescreen transfer, not even in the theaters did this movie look so good! I was so impressed with the sharp picture and rich colors. I had only previously viewed VHS copies of this movie the were blemished and faded. I give this movie my highest reccommendation for picture quality!

The movie has 3 soundtracks, DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1, and the original Mono track. I listed to the Dolby Digital one while viewing. The movie has no score to it however is loaded with real life effects of animals, insects, etcetera. In the director's commentary he explains the reasoning for this. There were no audio drops, hisses or pops. I found the sound pleasing and appropriate.

Special Features:

  • Second Bonus Commentary Featuring Cult Film Guru Joe Bob Briggs
  • THX Certified Widescreen Transfer (enhanced for 16X9)
  • Commentary by writer/director Meir Zarchi
  • Theatrical Trailers
  • TV Spots
  • Still Photo Gallery
  • Reviews
  • Foreign and Domestic Art
  • AND MORE!

This is where Elite Entertainment's Millennium Series packs it in!

The director's commentary is amazing! Meir Zarchi leads us through the making of this film with the soothing calm of a PBS narrator! Zarchi's pride in his production is clearly apparent! I really did not expect much from this commentary and was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it. Zarchi is a interesting character and a perfectionist in his work!

The second commentary with Joe Bob Briggs is a hoot! Briggs dispells the horrible inuendos the critics have used to label this film. Listening to Joe Bob makes me so nostalgic for the Saturday nights years ago on the The Movie Channel with his show! However a recent Elite Entertainment press release indicates this is just the first of many commentaries to be delivered by Joe Bob! Great news for Cult horror fans worldwide!
