I am trying to think if anything bad has ever happened in the name of religion. Aside from an endless sea of blood in the name of my God over yours…nope, I can't say. Here's a look at some of cinema's spookiest men of the cloth.

Night Of The Hunter Cover

Night of the Hunter (1955)

Robert Mitchum rules as the terrifying Harry Powell, a man on a mission to get what he is owed, at any cost. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and if you haven't seen it, please do yourself a favor and do so as soon as possible.

Poltergeist 2 Cover

Poltergeist II (1986)

Rev. Kane (Julian Beck) wants to come inside for a minute to talk about your soul and why, how and when you are going to die. Every minute this man is on screen, I want to hide under my seat. Sadly, when he is absent the movie loses all of its spirit.

To The Devil A Daughter

To the Devil a Daughter (1976)

Father Michael (Christopher Lee) runs his church a little differently and is all about "planned parenthood" when it comes to making demon babies. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Christopher Lee could be a totally good preacher guy, right? Okay, so he's totally evil…spoiler?!

Silver Bullet Cover

Silver Bullet (1985)

Reverend Lowe (Everett McGill) can't stand kids in wheelchairs playing with fireworks…someone could lose an eye! A coked-up Gary Busey drinks beer and babysits kids in this werewolf thriller from Stephen King. Corey Haim stars, but McGill owns every scene he is in. Check it out.

City Of The Living Dead Cover

City of the Living Dead (1980)

Father Thomas (Fabrizio Jovine) hangs himself in the church cemetery and opens the Gates of Hell…dick. If you've never seen an evil Italian priest swinging from a tree, you might want to avert your eyes or you could vomit a lot.

Red State Cover

Red State (2011)

Pastor Abin Cooper (Michael Parks) doesn't really belong in this category does he? He certainly seems like a nice guy and his congregation is all very inviting. You go on with the rest of the list, I'm going to hang out here with this charming man.

Evilspeak Cover

Evilspeak (1981)

Reverend Jameson (Joseph Cortese) is a real prick to the token buffoon, Stanley Coopersmith. Everybody bullies this sloppy boy, so where's the harm? What's the kid going to do?

Splatter University Cover

Splatter University (1984)

Father Janson (Dick Biel) is a voyeuristic jerk in a wheelchair. This sour man has little time for the whiny kids on campus, even if a maniac is stalking and slashing his way through the student body.

Happy Hell Night Cover

Happy Hell Night (1992):

Psycho priest Father Zachary Malius (Charles Cragin) killed seven frat boys and has escaped confinement to do it again. This creepy albino is quick with a quip as he takes lives, but the comedy won't deter you from his wrath.

Crimes Of Passion Cover

Crimes of Passion (1984)

Rev. Peter Shayne (Anthony Perkins) is determined to save the "hooker with a heart of gold," as he is the "reverend with a dildo of silver"! This is a nutty movie from the late, great Ken Russell and Perkins is spectacular as he chases down Kathleen Turner while spouting profanities.

So there you have it. While this is not a definitive list of "Holy Terrors", hopefully you will discover one or two you overlooked and can spend this Father's Day catching up on some alternative programming. For real terror however, you can always check out this titular gem:
