The 10 Most Anticipated Horror Comics of 2015

Written by James Ferguson

It's going to be tough to top 2014 when it comes to horror comics. There were so many great titles to choose from that included everything from zombies and vampires to straight up terror and insanity. With 2015 upon us, I figured now would be a good time to look at what's on the horizon when it comes to the spooky funny books. I tried to limit this to new titles only. If I included continuing series, I'd be here forever.

One more quick note. If you see something you like below, I strongly encourage you to pre-order the book at your local comic book shop. Pre-orders are huge for comics and they go a long way, especially for smaller publishers. If you don't have a local comic shop, I've included links below to TFAW when available and they deliver. Alternatively, you can also pre-order titles digitally through ComiXology.

Check out the list below in no particular order.

The Shunned One Cover

The Shunned One (IDW Publishing)

First announced back in 2013, The Shunned One is the latest from creator / writer / artist Alan Robert. It follows a rogue Angel of Death that refuses to take innocent lives. Instead, he carries out his own judgment on humanity based on their actions, not where their names appear on the Death List. This disrupts the balance of things and a number of natural disasters begin occurring as the angel goes into hiding amongst the humans.

This will be Robert's fourth comic series. What's interesting about him as a creator is that no two titles look alike. Each one has been about a unique topic and looks completely different. He's able to adjust and advance his art style to meet the needs of a given story. A preview of The Shunned One was included in the Killogy Halloween Special, but that served as just a taste of what's in store for this title.

Archie Meets Predator (Dark Horse Comics / Archie Comics)

Do I really need to say anything else about this title? Announced at New York Comic Con, this sounds like an incredibly fun title. The book will be written by Alex de Campi and illustrated by Fernando Ruiz, following Archie and his friends on a trip to Costa Rica for spring break. Then a Predator shows up. That's really all you need to know. This promises to be an insane and gore-filled comic.

Oh, and the series will feature covers by Francesco Francavilla and Eric Powell. The first issue is due out in April 2015.

Burning Fields (BOOM! Studios)

After turning in one of the best werewolf stories I've seen in years, Michael Moreci, Tim Daniel, and Colin Lorimer team up again for Burning Fields. Debuting later this month, the title follows dishonorably discharged army investigator Dana Atkinson, who returns to the Middle East when some American oil technicians disappear under bizarre circumstances. As she digs into the mystery, she uncovers a mythic evil that was once buried deep beneath the drill site.

The covers for Burning Fields have been incredible, with some great imagery that combines the oil fields with sheer terror. I can't wait to see what the interiors have in store, especially with the creative team attached.

Hellbreak Cover

Hellbreak (Oni Press)

I feel like a dope because I only recently started reading the work of Cullen Bunn. This guy has a ton of great comics under his belt and I've only scratched the surface with the likes of The Sixth Gun and Terrible Lizard. Hellbreak has Bunn working with artist Brian Churilla and colorist Dave Stewart. The book has been described as "One part Aliens, one part Dante's Inferno, and one part Inception." Based on that alone, I'm in.

Hellbreak deals with a number of Hells, each unique and terrible in their own special way. They range from mega-cities to empires to wastelands. With the right tools and know-how, you can break in whether you're dead or not. You'd need a pretty damn good reason to do that in the first place. Project Kerberos has developed the forbidden technology and a Special Forces extraction team is going in to rescue some lost souls. This sounds like the most insane action / horror movie ever. The first issue is set for release on March 11th and will retail for $1!

Just About Anything from Black Mask Studios

I really tried to narrow this down to just one title, but with the slate that Black Mask Studios has planned for 2015, that's just not possible.  The publisher already has an impressive array of titles like Toe Tag Riot, Godkiller, and Pirouette.  Creators like Steve Niles, Michael Moreci, Fabian Rangel Jr, and an up-and-coming writer by the name of Grant Morrison will be joining the fray in the coming months.  It seems like this is a place where comic writers and artists can tell stories that you will just not find anywhere else.  While I don't know all the details about some of the upcoming books, it's safe to say that if you see a Black Mask logo on it, it's going to be worth checking out.

IXth Generation (Top Cow Productions)

This might be a bit of a cheat as the first issue of the series has already come out, but it's still something to look forward to. This new comic mixes the supernatural elements of the Top Cow Universe with the technological side. Just look at that cover. Is that Aphrodite IX with the Witchblade? How crazy is that?

Set in the far future, the book centers on a world at war. Cyborg gods fight a never ending turf battle, but they can't really die. Each time their bodies are killed, they just regenerate a new one. This fun ends when the Darkness shows up and starts tearing stuff apart. This is big, epic sci-fi at its best.

Southern Cross Cover

Southern Cross (Image Comics)

Image Comics just held its fifth Image Expo where it announced 18 new titles from a slew of creators. All of those are definitely going to be worth checking out, but I'm still looking forward to Southern Cross, which was originally announced at last year's Image Expo. This is a sci-fi / horror title from Becky Cloonan and Andy Belanger which follows a woman named Alex Braith as she searches for answers regarding her sister's death.

Cloonan is already a dynamite artist and Southern Cross has her jumping into the writer's seat with this title. Based on the original announcement of the title, the book is a bigger and longer version of some of her mini comics and promises to get under your skin.

Frankenstein Underground (Dark Horse Comics)

Mike Mignola. Frankenstein's Monster. There really isn't much else you need to say about this title in order to get me interested. Oh, wait. It's set in the same world as Hellboy? Shut up and take my money. The five-issue mini-series is written by Mignola and drawn by Ben Stenbeck. It follows Frankenstein's monster as he encounters other creatures and dark secrets of the universe.

Mignola has a real talent for writing and drawing monsters, so I love everything about this project. Anything that expands the world of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. is more than welcome as well.

Monster Motors: The Curse of Minivan Helsing (IDW Publishing)

Speaking of Frankenstein, I am so friggin' excited for the sequel to the far too short one-shot Monster Motors, featuring everyone's favorite monster mechanic Vic Frankenstein and his pal iGOR. Written by Brian Lynch and illustrated by Nick Roche, this follow up explores more of the pun-filled cars that seem to plague Vic and his new garage in Transylvania, Kentucky.

After taking down Cadillacula, our hero and his Frankenride are in the sights of the notorious four-wheeled monster hunter Minivan Helsing. This is a two issue series but I sincerely hope that more are planned. The first issue is scheduled for release in February 2015.

Hoax Hunters Cover

Hoax Hunters (Heavy Metal)

Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley's Hoax Hunters has been off the air for far too long. My favorite comic of 2012 is returning as the first monthly comic series to be published by Heavy Metal. The book features a reality TV show where the hosts debunk paranormal mysteries, but they're secretly covering up the existence of monsters and all manner of things that go bump in the night. It's the perfect cover. Oh, and one of the characters is a group of crows in an astronaut suit named Murder. Yes, it's just as awesome as it sounds.

Heavy Metal is also developing Hoax Hunters into a feature film which makes me incredibly happy. Hoax Hunters Season 2 kicks off with a skeleton army beginning on March 25th, 2015.

These are my ten most anticipated horror comics of 2015 right now.  I'm sure this will change as more and more titles are announced.  This could be an entirely different list after San Diego Comic Con in July.  This is what I'm looking forward to, but I want to hear what you've got on your pull list coming up in the next few months.  Hit me up in the comments!
