CRUEL SUMMER WORLD PREMIERE AT FRIGHTFEST 2016

Horror Channel Frightfest has always been known for seeking out as yet unknown gems from emerging filmmakers, as well as championing the work of first-time British directors. There's a strong showing from the UK film industry at this year's festival, none more so than in the 'First Blood' strand which will showcase the directorial debuts of five British directors. Included in First Blood is Phillip Escott and Craig Newman's Cruel Summer. Escott said of its inclusion in the August line-up, "FrightFest is one of the biggest and best festivals on the planet for horror fans, of which Craig and I both are. To have a film that we’ve created included is truly thrilling and we are extremely excited by the prospect of having CRUEL SUMMER premiere there in August. It really is a dream come true.”

CRUEL SUMMER stars Emmerdale heartthrob Danny Miller in his most bold and daring role to date and is directed by first timers Phillip Escott and Craig Newman. The film centres on a crime, telling the story from both the perspective of the victim and the perpetrators, charting what horrifying impact a day can have on the lives of those involved and those around them.

Danny, a teenager with autism, escapes the inner city for the beautiful countryside as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Little does he know that bitter Nicholas is hunting him, stemming from a lie created by the enamoured, and envious, Julia. The duo enlists the help of new boy Calvin, under false allegations that Danny is a known paedophile. As the three close in on Danny, Nicholas' behaviour becomes increasingly erratic and violent; Julia and Calvin must decide whether to go through with Nicholas' deadly plan.

Phillip wrote the script, based on a story developed by both him and Craig. Rounding out the cast are Reece Douglas (Waterloo Road), Natalie Martins (Poltergeist Activity) and newcomer Richard Pawulski. Post production was carried out by the BAFTA and EMMY awarding-winning Bang Post Productions (Dr. Who, Sherlock) and is executively produced by Chris Crow (Panic Button, The Lighthouse) and David Lloyd (Devil’s Bridge, The Lighthouse).
