DIANE WORLD PREMIERE AT FRIGHTFEST 2017
Michael Mongillo is a musician, comic book creator, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He also wears the writing, producing and directing hats for Diane, a supernatural horror/thriller that aims to tell a compelling and honest story about the human condition.
Steve’s lingering injuries and regrets from the war in Afghanistan plunge him into a soulless routine until the dead body of a beautiful singer, Diane, is dumped in his back yard. Steve takes a digital photo of her before reporting the murder to the police and soon he becomes obsessed with the dead woman’s image. Now the prime suspect, Steve is scrutinized by the police, hassled by Diane’s widower, and attacked by self-righteous neighbors. Before long, the malevolent ghost of Diane begins to work a dark spell that leads Steve to strange and startling revelations.
Mongillo says of the film, "Diane is my favorite movie of all the movies I’ve directed. I achieved what I set out to do with the fewest compromises yet and, with as much objectivity as one can have from my vantage point, I’m convinced I’d reciprocate emotionally and intellectually as a viewer. Add to which, I am so proud of the work of my collaborators, most of whom I’ve been making movies with for nearly twenty years, all of whom I owe my deepest gratitude (in particular Taylor Warren and Jason Alan Smith).
I am equally grateful to those who will take the time to watch Diane in this vast sea of content that ironically seems to be killing auteur-driven cinema in favor of groupthink product and its mass consumption. To those who watch: I hope you enjoy Diane, I hope it feels authentic, and I hope you find it entertaining in spite of it having artistic aims, which is not necessarily the same thing as being art, although maybe Diane is art, too. You can be the judge of that."
