With Barbara Crampton's appearance in four films at this year's Film4 Frightfest, it was no wonder she's been announced as the Guest Icon. Road Games, by British director Abner Pastoll, is one such vehicle (no pun) for the headline star. The film is Pastoll's debut feature, after being selected as a directing talent by the 2009 BFI Film Festival and winning acclaim for a number of short comedies across festivals in Europe. Road Games sees the tone turn rather more dark as a young travelling couple cross paths with a particular brand of Gallic serial killer.
Pastoll says of the film, "Road Games is a psychological thriller fused with suspense and atmospheric intensity. It's a dark and twisted love story set against the backdrop of a serial killer. I'm interested mostly in stories where the unexpected can happen, and playing with suspense in what you don't know and what you don't see really amplifies the feeling and tone that can capture an audience and keep them on the edge of their seat in anticipation of what happens next.
Growing up in my family's cinema created my passion for films and storytelling - I am particularly intrigued by clear genre-driven tales with strong, interesting characters who are in every sense lost but who somehow find themselves no matter how intense or crazy their situation.
In Road Games, I wanted to explore the cultural divergence between England and France within the thriller genre. Creating characters we identify and connect with makes it all the more frightening in being so close to home, yet feeling so far away. It has always been my intention to use a careful balance between English and French language to enhance the atmosphere, to harness the mood and the thrills and especially to play with the humour and emotion. It raises the feeling of danger, suspense, mystery and intrigue in not being able to fully understand or communicate - this is something that almost anyone who has travelled can identify with - we've all been in a situation where we have felt out of place, lost and alone, suspicious of those we are not familiar with".
Road Games will have its world premiere on Sunday 30th August at the following times: Film 4 Screen 1.00pm - Arrow Screen 3.15pm - Horror Channel Screen 11.15am.
The sun drenched days of summer turn dark and ominous for hitchhiking due Jack and Veronique when they become inexplicably entangles with a mysterious married couple and a local roadkill collector in rural France.
