LAST GIRL STANDING
Do you ever wonder about the repercussions on characters in horror movies? I know I do. While it's fun to watch the carnage of a slasher movie, there's always a nagging thought in my head that it can't be that simple once all is said and done. People die. Lots of people. And in reality the final girl (or guy) wouldn't just walk away without some huge police investigation and probably a lengthy court case to prove that what occurred was done in self-defence. Even putting the legalities aside, a trauma like that isn't going to pave the way for a subsequent normal life.
The same thoughts have obviously troubled Last Girl Standing director Benjamin R. Moody. He says of his inspiration for the film, "So many horror films, especially slasher movies, end with a lone surviving female, traumatized by the events that just transpired. When seeing your friends hacked to pieces by a masked killer, how do you go back to regular life? We see this situation play out in almost every horror movie, but what about life after it? I wanted to dive into the aftermath of a slasher movie. I wanted to see where that survivor would be 5 years later and how those events might still affect her. In a way, Last Girl Standing is a sequel to a movie that does not exist (but you are extremely familiar with) and in that sense; I also wanted to look at the repetitious nature of horror franchises. It’s an attempt to take a grounded and unique look at how a horror franchise repeats itself over and over again". Food for thought, and a promising premise for this meta-horror. Last Girl Standing will be a Discovery Screen 2 World premiere on Monday 31st August at 3.00pm.
What happens after the horror movie? Years after a masked killer murdered her closest friends, the lone survivor struggles to move on with her life until one day, she meets new friends and must finally face her past in order to have a future.
Five years ago, a masked killer brutally murdered a group of friends. Since then, Camryn (Akasha Villalobos), the lone survivor, has struggled to reclaim her shattered life. Wracked with guilt and paranoia, Camryn leads a depressingly lonely existence until Nick (Brian Villalobos), a new co-worker, befriends Camryn and attempts to integrate her into his group of friends. Just when she might be ready to start a new life, Camryn’s past comes back to haunt her. Can Camryn ever have a life again, or is she destined to be alone?
Part slasher movie, part character study, LAST GIRL STANDING is a penetrating and intimate look at what happens to the survivors of horror movies.
