With all the death and horror, pain and misery on display over the Frightfest weekend, you're going to need a little bit of light relief unless you want to go home with a serious psychological disorder. Thankfully, new horror comedy Bloodsucking Bastards looks set to deliver that in balls-to-the-wall vampire ass-kicking style. Forget Blade, when it comes to killing vamps, all you need are some office workers and the contents of the stationery cupboard.
The film, described as Office Space meets Shaun of the Dead (doesn't every horror comedy want to be something meets Shaun of the Dead?) pits everyone's favourite Cabin in the Woods stoner, Fran Kranz, against the new manager in his office, who turns out to have a dark secret. Director Brian James O'Connell has this to say on the merger between horror and comedy: "Comedy is giving the audience what they want in a way they don’t expect it. Horror is showing the audience something they can’t believe is happening while simultaneously making them imagine the same thing could happen to them. Bloodsucking Bastards ties these two innate human experiences together perfectly. The doldrums of the workplace is perfect fodder for comedy as it is something we can all relate to as people. The sudden, shocking violence that happens in a place so familiar, from our co-workers no less, truly speaks to our primal fear of what we’re actually capable of doing to each other". Bloodsucking Bastards will be a Discovery Screen 1 European premiere on Friday 28th August at 11.30pm. Honestly, after seeing the trailer I can't imagine a better way to round out your night on that date.
An Office Space meets Shaun of the Dead action-packed horror comedy, BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS stars Fran Kranz (Cabin in the Woods) as Evan Sanders, a low-level, dutiful employee stuck in a boring job at a soul-killing every corporation. Evan’s the kind of guy who does all the work and gets none of the credit, but at least he gets to spend his days with his beautiful co-worker/girlfriend Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick of The Collection) and his slacker best friend Tim (Joey Kern of Super Troopers), so he soldiers on in the hope of one day getting his coveted sales director position.
Unfortunately, it all falls apart in one fell swoop when Amanda breaks up with him and Evan’s boss Ted (Joel Murray of Mad Men) hands his promotion to his college nemesis Max (Pedro Pascal of Game of Thrones). And it isn’t just their sordid past Evan has to deal with. After his fellow officemates start going through disturbing changes (which, paradoxically, make them better employees) and bodies begin to pile up, Evan learns the horrible truth: Max is a vampire. And even worse... a vamp with a plan.
BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS takes audiences on a hilarious, blood-spattered roller coaster ride in the most terrifying locale of all: the American workplace. Evan must find a way to stop the evil brewing amidst the cubicles, expose Max as the bloodsucking bastard that he is, win back Amanda, and save his pals before his life and career go from dead-end... to just dead.
