Review:

Spencer and his grumpy father have caught up with the local military marching through the area seeking shelter from the Martian invaders. They've been arguing constantly and that's not going to help when giant bugs attack. Now would be a weird time for a heart-to-heart, but that's what we're going to get as chaos rains down upon them.

There's a constant thread of humor through Mars Attacks, even in the most horrifying scenes. Much of this comes from the image of Spencer pushing his dad around in a wheelbarrow. It's the only way for him to get around, much to Spencer's dismay. He's got to listen to his dad berate him every step of the way. You wonder why he doesn't just dump the old man and go on with his life.

Writer Kyle Starks gives us an incredible exchange between the two that is absolutely touching. It took aliens invading Earth for them to finally see eye-to-eye and tell each other how they really feel. It's a heartwarming sequence that's balanced by people getting their skin melted off and huge mosquitoes eating soldiers.

Speaking of which, artist Chris Schweizer creates the right blend of humor and horror in these sequences. Yes, the image of Spencer and his father is silly, but it's much needed comic relief in the face of the pandemonium breaking out all around them. There's an emotionless look to the Martians that comes down to their eyes. They're always wide open, like they're peering right into your soul.

The cool blues of the night contrast with the bright greens of the Martians and the oranges of the fires they leave behind. This issue starts out in the evening, but by the end, it might as well be sunup with all the flames billowing all over the place. This provides such a great backdrop against the conversation between Spencer and his father.

Mars Attacks is pure fun in comic book form. The Martians are attacking without a lick of mercy and these two unlikely characters are in the thick of it, struggling just to get by. They're not heroes ready to fight back this invading force and that makes their journey so entertaining.
