For those just tuning in to Interceptor, shame on you. In the future, humanity escapes Earth just before nuking the hell out of it in an effort to eradicate hordes of vampires. It didn't work. Now the bloodsuckers are advanced enough to send spaceships after the humans, and mankind has sent a specially trained soldier with a huge battle suit back home to stop the vampires once and for all. The one wrinkle in this plan is that there are still a bunch of survivors left on Earth.
This is where Interceptor throws us a curve ball. Poli, the aforementioned soldier, was sent here with a mission to destroy. She's not trained to rescue, nor is her ship equipped to transport a group of people. Questions are raised as this realization settles with Poli. Did the humans back on their new planet of Palus know about the survivors? Was Poli's mission a one-way trip?
This issue is a bit exposition heavy as it dives into the inner workings of the current vampire elite; however, the information isn't presented like a lecture. Despite the fact that they've inherited the world, they still deal with the same stupid problems that humanity faces on a regular basis. There's class warfare, world hunger, nepotism, and drugs (although in this case, the drugs are tainted blood). The planet is a powder keg and Poli might just be the match poised to set it all off.

My favorite scene is probably the opening few pages where we check back in on Palus as the scientists in charge of Poli's mission realize that they screwed everything up. The President (who looks like a 12-year-old) is not having any of it. There's a great shot of one of the scientists when he's asked if he ever tried sending a message back, and he just makes a face and shrugs. It's a great comedic moment before the comic runs headlong into the vampire action. A big part of this is Dylan Burnett's artwork that walks the line between humor and horror.
Burnett really shines in the final pages of the book, which I'm not going to spoil here. The scene is such that you will get so friggin' pumped for the next issue. Take whatever comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Sci-Fi Badass” and multiply it by a hundred, and you'll get to the level of awesome on display here.
Just in case you forgot, Earth is pretty screwed up after mankind left it in ruins. This is brought forth in a gorgeous color palette from Dee Cunniffe. The backgrounds are dark and dingy with a sky often shaded a blood red or a cool blue. I love the contrast between them and the alabaster skin of Poli and the vampires.
This issue of Interceptor has the feeling of the calm before the storm. The creative team is moving all of the players into just the right places for them to beat the ever loving shit out of each other. The stakes have changed though, as Poli isn't here to simply eliminate the vampires. I'm so plugged in to this book now and you should be too.
