Review:

Zedo and Gogi set out to the surface world on an introductory mission. If they’re successful, they get to join a gang that’s been vying for leadership of the Underground City. Of course, nothing goes as planned. Zedo gets trapped and comes close to being eaten by a giant monster (I forgot to mention the giant monsters that roam on the surface, didn’t I?), while Gogi flees out to the frozen wasteland. Now they’re both forced to prove themselves if they want to live.

The problem I have with a lot of kaiju stories is that they tend to be all style and no substance. It’s very cool to see a big monster tear through a city, but if that’s all there is, there’s not much to enjoy. Giants flips the script a bit by putting the human story at the forefront. You have Zedo and Gogi’s tale, which starts together and then separates into two different threads, as the central part of the story. They just happen to live in a world where huge Godzilla-like creatures walk the earth and humans have been forced to live underground.

Miguel Valderrama breathes so much life into the characters with his artwork. They’re very expressive, so you get a good understanding as to who they are and what they’re going through based on how they look. What is particularly interesting is the differences that develop between Zedo and Gogi. They start out pretty similar, but now they’re on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Zedo is hardened and angry. The way he sees it, his best friend left him for dead, so he’s going to get what he has coming to him, even if he has to kill to do it. We see this when Zedo returns to the Underground City. He stares at the gang member that sent him on the mission with cold eyes and a furrowed brow. Zedo is taking none of this guy’s shit. He may be smaller, but he’s way angrier and that rage is fueling him to new heights.

Meanwhile, Gogi is humbled and weak. He’s fortunate to be alive, as a group of survivors calling themselves The Forsaken have taken him in. Gogi has to depend on them to nurse him back to life and get him back home. He looks almost pathetic in his beat up clothes and bandages. Granted, Zedo has a similar look in terms of his attire, but it looks completely different in this setting.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a monster comic without the monsters. The design for the kaiju is terrifying. It’s like a Tyrannosaurus Rex merged with the creatures from Pacific Rim. This is a creature born to the top of the food chain. It’s massive and seems to be made of muscle, towering over the city as it searches for the humans.

Giants is like The Warriors meets Godzilla. You’ll come for the giant monsters and stay for the compelling character development. We don’t know how or why these creatures have taken over the planet and it doesn’t matter. What is important is how Gogi and Zedo are going to survive and what will happen when they meet again.
