Review:

Giant monsters have sprouted up around the world and a bunch of super heroes have arrived to punch them really hard.  That's all you really need to know about the latest Marvel event, Monsters Unleashed.  This book is the Avengers tie-in.  You can tell by the weird and confusing numbering of the issue, but hey, at least we got a new, shiny number one on the stands instead of a one-shot or a tie-in issue of the ongoing series.

Anyway, this comic is split in half.  The first part has absolutely nothing to do with Monsters Unleashed.  It follows the Avengers as they head over to Boston to bust up a Maggia meet-up only to find a super villain.  Punches are thrown and the bad guy is taken down.  Then monsters show up.

The second half is almost identical to the Avengers scene from Monsters Unleashed #1, complete with re-used dialogue.  There are some expanded moments, showing the further actions of some of the characters, but for $4.99 for a 32-page comic, I expected more new content surrounding the event.  You will not get that here.

The story itself isn't bad.  I have a problem with the fact that it's shoe-horned into the Monsters Unleashed storyline.  The opening segment could have been worked into the regular Avengers or even Spider-Man comics.  Instead, it feels out of place when you're coming into the book expecting Earth's Mightiest Heroes to be slugging it out with kaiju from the jump.

Writer Jim Zub nails the characters and their personalities perfectly.  This is especially true for Spider-Man, who serves as the catalyst for the trip to Boston in the first place.  The witty dialogue is on point and is matched with the interactions with the rest of the team.  Some of these characters are new to me as I'm a lapsed Marvel reader, but you get enough information to understand the basics and keep the story flowing.

Artist Sean Izaakse delivers on the action in both the Maggia and monster fights.  There are several characters to juggle and each one gets a moment to shine and beat the ever-loving crap out of someone or something.  There's something so cool about seeing a team of super heroes run head long into battle, uncertain as to their foes' true abilities, but determined to protect the people around them.  This is matched by Frank D'Armata's colors.  You can tell this is a big Marvel super hero book.

Avengers #1.MU is an unnecessary tie-in to Monsters Unleashed.  If you're reading the main book, there is no reason for you to pick this one up.  You will not miss anything and you'll probably be thankful that you didn't have to drop five bucks on a comic that includes nearly the same pages you had in the main event book.  This isn't a knock against the creative team, as they did a fine job with some great artwork and characterization.  It's just that there's no real reason for this comic to exist aside from a cash grab.
