Party Wolves In My Skull 01

Written by Michael Allen Rose
2011, 108 pages, Fiction
Released on November 11th, 2011

Review:

Take good care of you eyes, readers. If you fail to do so, maybe they will jump out of your skull and elope to a different town. At least that's what happened to the main character in Michael Allen Rose's Party Wolves in my Skull, which is part of the 2012 New Bizarro Author Series from Eraserhead Press.

Party Wolves in my Skull tells the story of Norman Spooter, who awakens one morning to find that his eyeballs have decided to vacate his cranium. The tiny orbs fell in love with each other and decided to elope, leaving their owner blind and desperately trying to hunt them down. Unluckily for Norman, the peepers had carefully concocted a plan for their escape. After all attempts at getting the tiny spheres to jump back into his skull, the eyes steal Norman's car keys and drive away to a place where they can get married. Blind and heartbroken, Norman goes to bed, staples a VACANCY sign to his forehead and falls asleep. When he wakes up, he's still blind, but his skull is no longer empty: a pack of wolves has moved into his head, and they like to party. Instead of kicking the wolves out, Norman accepts the security deposit and sets out to find his departed organs. What follows is part love story and part road trip adventure that includes fights, penguins, a scorned walrus, a strange motel, more wolves and a lot of companionship, even if the party wolves turn out to be less wolf-like than expected.

Michael Allen Rose is not a man who likes to waste words and that becomes very obvious from the first page. Every sentence seems to be pushing the action forward and moving the story into more explosive action and new, weirder spaces. From the weed smoking to the fighting, the author manages to keep a sense of humor. As Norman and Zoe, his traveling partner, face persecution, violence and despair, the narrative also turns into a love story in which a jealous walrus plays the nemesis to the travelers' blossoming relationship.

Party Wolves in my Skull might be one of the most bizarre statements about love ever made. Then again, maybe the author just wanted to have a little fun writing about a guy running around trying to catch his own eyeballs. On both scenarios, the book works perfectly fine while also being a quick, entertaining read. As a bonus, the tale brings to mind the energy and pace of classic car chase movies like The Italian Job and Vanishing Point. So, if you want to party with some furry wolves that might not be wolves after all, grab a copy of this fun, fast-paced read today.

Gabino lives in Austin, Texas, where he reads an inordinate amount of books and pens down reviews only for the big bucks he makes doing so. When he was about 12, his mother would tell him that reading all the H.P. Lovecraft and Poe would not lead to anything good. Being on the staff page at HorrorTalk is the confirmation of that.
