Who says there’s a dearth of originality in Hollywood? Suffering from a lull in business, two hillbilly entrepreneurs decide to expand their back-alley abortion clinic by offering a group discount weekend couple’s retreat. Come with your partner, eat some food, drink some hooch, have an abortion, then spend the rest of the weekend having sex and enjoying the gracious redneck amenities!
While I applaud the irreverence of Zombie Babies, let’s make something perfectly clear; this movie is awful. It truly is an abortion to the senses. It’s equal parts Ghoulies and Deliverance under the astute direction of Ed Wood. If you’re into cutting edge CGI (for the ‘80s), latex creations straight out of a deck of Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, miserable acting on par with that found in tedious HR videos about sexual harassment, and a script seemingly written by horny teens with the help of an R-rated Madlibs book, then Zombie Babies is the movie for you.
I’m not sure what scene most embodies the true spirit of Zombie Babies. Perhaps it’s where one of the undead fetuses lunges towards its intended victim and ends up being captured in an open spinning blender only to have its tiny little mutilated zombie baby penis fly into the mouth of someone nearby, ejaculating before she has a chance to remove it. Or maybe it’s the scene where a bound and blindfolded Spaulding Smails wannabe, thinking he is about to make sexy sexy time with the whore that he had unintentionally impregnated, winds up not only performing cunnilingus on a zombified infant, but also gets a mouthful of gooey shit that would make the most ardent coprophiliac proud.
Zombie Babies is in no way a good movie. However, I love that it exists. I fully support the right to produce such a vulgar and insolent film. Zombie Babies cheekily captures the true spirit of independent horror filmmaking, taking risks, being profane, throwing caution (and taste) to the wind, without one iota of care about offending someone’s delicate sensibilities. My twelve year old self, illegally descrambling Cinemax in the wee hours of the morning with a soda can tab as to watch soft-core porn in my room, would have absolutely loved Zombie Babies. The thirty-eight year old version, not so much.
Video and Audio:
The 1.78:1 anamorphic video and 2.0 Dolby audio are both substandard. Dialogue tracks are at times not in sync with the actors, but quite frankly it just adds to the overall character of the film.
Special features include a seventeen minute making-of featurette that shows you what happens behind the scenes of a no-budget horror flick, a commentary track from the writer/director along with one of the female leads, and trailers.
