Enter The Woods in September
High school isn’t easy for anybody. The students are all going through puberty. The faculty have to deal with that on a meager salary. You know what would make that worse? Having the entire school transported to an alien planet. That’s the setup for The Woods, written by James Tynion IV and illustrated by Michael Dialynas and published by BOOM! Studios. The first four issues of the series will be collected in the first trade paperback and released in September on the same day as issue #5. What a perfect jumping on point. Here’s the write up from the publisher:
On October 16, 2013, 437 students, 52 teachers, and 24 additional staff from Bay Point Preparatory High School in suburban Milwaukee, WI vanished without a trace. Countless light years away, far outside the bounds of the charted universe, 513 people find themselves in the middle of an ancient, primordial wilderness. Where are they? Why are they there? The answers will prove stranger than anyone could possibly imagine. If you’re fan of teen conspiracy comics like Morning Glories, Sheltered, and Revival, you’ll immediately be sucked into The Woods.
The Woods isn’t some vast sci-fi adventure comic. These kids didn’t turn into Flash Gordon. They’re hunted by savage beasts and the lot of them are on the verge of a total nervous breakdown. Tensions have risen between the staff and the students as they struggle to figure out how to survive. People have died. It’s probably the worst field trip ever.
“If you have $9.99 to take a shot on a new trade in September, The Woods: Volume 1 is a bullseye,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “James and Michael have delivered one of the most refreshing and entertaining new series of the year. It’s strange, smart, and suspenseful, and we’re over the moon to be collecting the first arc into a volume that readers can easily jump into.”
This won’t be the first time that BOOM! Studios has pulled a move like this. The upcoming release of Dead Letters: Volume 1 is priced in the same manner. This is an excellent opportunity for new readers to jump onto these books that are flying off the shelves. Comics like these are generally under-ordered which means that there are limited quantities of the single issues as local shops. When new readers go to check it out, they have to wait for potential second or third printings which can be discouraging. This way you can quickly pick up the first arc in trade and jump right into the story without missing a beat. If you haven’t guessed by now, you should do this. The Woods is a pretty damn good comic and the same can be said for Dead Letters.
The Woods: Volume 1 will be released on September 3rd.
