Universal Cable Productions to Develop Three New Comic Book TV Series
Comic books are taking over the big and small screens as of late and everyone is getting in on the action. Universal Cable Productions has just announced three new deals to bring some more funny books to TV. First up, UCP has signed Warren Ellis to develop his first original TV series in collaboration with Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment. This is awesome for many reasons; most of them being that Ellis is brilliant. Most recently, he’s been writing Trees, published through Image Comics which has been a stellar read. By slapping his name on anything, it instantly guarantees a loyal audience. Setting him free to create an original TV series should prove exciting.
"I've been strongly drawn to television over the last few years, and working with brilliant and determined collaborators like Gale and the UCP team, I'm delighted at the opportunity to add my voice to the new, novelistic TV form that's evolved so dramatically," said Ellis.
UCP wasn’t done yet. The company has also partnered with IDW Entertainment to option Night Mary with the intent to co-develop it as a live action TV series. Night Mary was created by Rick Remender and Kieron Dwyer and was most recently collected in the Crawl Space Omnibus from Image Comics. The book centered on a young woman trained to be a lucid dreamer. She works with her father in his sleep disorder clinic where she enters the dreams of patients. When one of them is revealed to be a serial killer, she finds herself in danger as nightmares and reality become intertwined.
"Of my creator-owned projects, Night Mary has always held a special place, definitely the best thing Kieron Dwyer and I created together,” said Rick Remender. “It's very gratifying to see it finding new footing as a television series, ten years after its initial publication, and with such a skilled team at the helm.”

John Pogue will write and direct the Night Mary pilot. Ted Adams and David Ozer from IDW Entertainment and David Alpert and Rick Jacobs from Circle of Confusion will serve as executive producers along with John Pogue.
UCP has also option Five Ghosts from Frank Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham as an original TV series. The comic was originally funded through Kickstarter through Black Mask Studios and is currently published by Image Comics. Five Ghosts is a pulp adventure comic set in the 1930s. It follows a treasure hunter possessed by five literary ghosts (Merlin, Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, Musashi, and Dracula) who can draw from each of their abilities as needed.
Evan Daugherty will write the Five Ghosts pilot and serve as executive producer. Chris Bender and Jake Weiner from Benderspink will also serve as executive producers along with Jake Wagner as producer, and Matt Pizzolo and Brett Gurewitz as co-executive producers.
“We love genre at UCP and thankfully so do audiences. We've made it a priority to seek out great properties that will attract equally great creators to adapt them,” said Dawn Olmstead, Executive Vice President, Development, Universal Cable Productions. “From Warren’s dynamic plots and complex characters to the dark and suspenseful world of ‘Night Mary,’ and the creative mash-up of five literary icons in the cult hit ‘Five Ghosts,’ they are all provocative, distinctive and have the promise to be a whole lot of fun.”
