Memetic Destroys the Human Race Over the Internet
The Internet has produced some pretty amazing things, some of which don't even involve pornography. One inescapable aspect of the web is the meme. You've all seen them at one point or another. The cat with poor grammar who loves cheeseburgers. The walrus and his bucket. Face palms. They're everywhere and the good ones can spread very quickly through social media. But what if one could be weaponized? That's the premise behind Memetic, an upcoming comic from creator and writer James Tynion IV, featuring artwork from Eryk Donovan, published by BOOM! Studios. The human race is about to get annihilated in just 72 hours over a meme. I really hope it wasn't a cat picture. Here's the write-up from the publisher:
A Meme is an idea that starts with an individual, and then spreads to multiple persons and potentially entire societies. Richard Dawkins suggests a meme’s success comes from its effectiveness to the host. But history shows that destructive memes can spread just as rapidly through society. MEMETIC shows the progression of a weaponized meme that leads to the utter annihilation of the human race within 72 hours. The root of this apocalypse is a single image on the internet, a “meme” in the popular sense. A meme that changes everything.
“The Woods is just the beginning,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “James Tynion IV is one of the brightest new voices to emerge in recent years, and it's been a flat-out joy to make a home for his original projects at BOOM!. With Memetic, James and Eryk show us the destructive power of the internet, a terrifying look at how imagery and ideas can shape the behavior of our culture.”
James Tynion IV's The Woods has been a stellar read so far so I'm looking forward to whatever else he has up his sleeve. To promote this announcement, a number of BOOM! creators and staff tweeted out an image of a hypnotic sloth. It was an Internet mystery.
Memetic will be a three issue limited series. Each chapter covers a 24 hour time period. Each issue is oversized at 48 pages, retailing for $4.99. The first issue is set to debut on October 22nd and will feature a main cover by series artist Eryk Donovan and a limited edition Meme variant cover.
