Godzilla Returns with New Mini-Series
While Godzilla is tearing up theaters around the world, he's also kicking ass in comics. IDW Publishing has announced a new five issue mini-series entitled Godzilla: Cataclysm debuting this August. The comic will feature a stand-alone story, similar to how Godzilla: The Half-Century War was handled. Cataclysm will be written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Dave Wachter.
The mini-series picks up after the monster apocalypse, where Godzilla has all but abandoned humanity. In this dystopian future, an elder tribe leader named Hiroshi is haunted by the monsters of the past that nearly wiped out mankind. As his tribe faces new dangers, his memories of the past may well be the key to saving the future.
“I've wanted to write a Godzilla story for as long as I can remember,” said Bunn, “before I even started Kindergarten, I drew a book titled Attack of the Monsters, which featured Godzilla, along with other monsters, terrorizing the world. The story started with Godzilla erupting from an iceberg and ended when the military dropped a massive sword on his head. I like to think that my storytelling sensibilities have matured since those days, but the desire to write a Godzilla story has remained with me.”
The timing of this new mini-series couldn't be more perfect. Not only is Godzilla back on the big screen, but 2014 marks the 60th anniversary of the release of Gojira, the film that started it all. While fans wait for Cataclysm to hit, they can get their Godzilla fix with the ongoing Godzilla series, as well as Rulers of Earth.
