Is it just me or is the apocalypse the new zombie in comics? I'm seeing more and more titles show up depicting what happens to the remnants of humanity once the world ends. It's definitely a fascinating topic and it carries some of the same themes that the undead can but without that pesky appetite for brains. The latest comic to jump into the post-apocalyptic setting is Doomsday.1 from legendary comic creator John Byrne. The four issue mini-series will be released from IDW Publishing beginning in May.
Doomsday.1 tells the story of seven astronauts stranded in the International Space Station as most of the planet Earth is destroyed by a large solar flare. They're powerless as they watch this devastation occurs. With their homes gone and all communication lost, there is little to do but continue to ration their supplies and wait for death in zero gravity. Of course, these are adventurers. You have to be one in order to sit on top of a rocket and shoot yourself into space. They head back to the planet to confront the dangers left behind in the wake of annihilation.
“I've been thinking for some time that I would like to revisit a post-apocalypse kind of scenario, such as was seen in my very first ‘dramatic’ work in comics, but this time without the more obvious fantasy elements of that original series (mermaids, alien robots, frozen mammoths, etc.),” said Byrne. “When bits and pieces of this new series first started to percolate around in my head, I knew almost at once the shape that ‘revisit’ would take; something in the ‘All-New, All-Different’ vein. And the first time I doodled some images of my ‘crew,’ I knew I was there!"
“As much as I enjoyed seeing John work on the various licensed titles we’ve done, it’s a continued blast to work with him in developing new concept after new concept this year,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “If Earth has to be destroyed in a flaming conflagration, there’s no one I’d rather see bring that carnage and its aftermath to life than JB.”
The first issue of Doomsday.1 will hit comic stands and your favorite digital device on May 19th, 2013. The book is written and illustrated by John Byrne. Subscribers will receive a special wraparound variant cover.
What do you think of this latest take on the end of the world? How many of the seven astronauts will make it through the four issues alive?
