Motivated by growing public fear that humanity will meet its doom in 2012, producers at Midwest-based Corn Bred Films are preparing to descend on the Joplin, MO area this spring to create Zompocalypso,a movie the studio describes as “an improvised found-footage comedy with a sprinkle of horror.  Think The Blair Witch Project as directed by Christopher Guest.”

Born from an improv session Corn Bred filmed for a corporate client, the movie follows Dale and Darren, a pair of bumpkin brothers who've retreated to a rural farmhouse with a "camera, a small arsenal and a case of expired beans" to wait out the impending apocalypse.

"When I sat there and watched these guys — who had never met each other before that moment, mind you — improv for a half hour about surviving a zombie apocalypse it dawned on me that this could make a very funny film," said Eric Anderson, co-founder of Corn Bred Films. "I contacted actors Chris Meister and Mike Manship afterward and they were in immediately."

Filming is currently scheduled for spring/summer 2012.  Plans call for the majority of the film to be shot outside Riverton, Kansas, about 10 miles from Joplin.  Additional filming will take place in Chicago.

To raise the money, they're using IndieGoGo, the popular online crowdsourcing site. With 25 days to go, they’ve hit 20% of $10,000 goal, with the deadline to pledge falling on February 20th.

"Getting the initial $10,000 allows us to get started," said Anderson, who runs the independent film studio with his wife, Amelia Dellos. "Frankly, we will go as far as we can with it. If we can get an entire film in the can for $10,000, great. I think we can."

I'm tentatively interested about this. I'm a huge fan of found footage movies, and I support low-budget via IndieGoGo and the like when I can, but with found footage movies being so hit and miss it's hard to get excited anymore. I like the idea, though. Hillbillies and zombies can be a lot of fun.
