People have been fighting zombies for years but we rarely get to see our pets duke it out with the undead.  Comic publisher Big Dog Ink is set to change that this April with the release of Rex, Zombie Killer, a one shot comic written by Rob Anderson and illustrated by DaFu Yu.  The book focuses on Rex, a hyper-intelligent Golden Retriever, along with a sign-language-speaking gorilla and a small group of other animals as they travel across the country in search of safety and a home.

"I've always wondered what happens to pets when the zombies arrive," explained writer Rob Anderson. "And I've always loved stories that show the heart and tenacity of animals, like We3 and Homeward Bound / The Incredible Journey. In REX ZK, the animals are trying to make their way across California to an underground government bunker where the scientist who raised Rex is now in hiding. But Rex isn't necessarily revealing everything he knows about the situation to his pack."

"This is a story I've been wanting to tell since at least 2008, because it combines three of my big passions: animals, zombies and comic books," Anderson said. "My constant writing companions are my dog and cat, and they're well trained for the coming zombie apocalypse with their patented 'play dead' routine."

Anderson described the comic to me as "The Walking Dead meets Homeward Bound."  He didn't really need to say anything after that because I was sold.  Look for a review of the book right here on HorrorTalk soon.

Rex, Zombie Killer #1 is a double-sized, 56 page full color one-shot.  It's due out in comic shops this April for $3.50.  This is a creator-owned book from a small publisher.  This types of comics live and die based on pre-orders so if the thought of talking animals battling zombies appeals to you — and I don't know why it wouldn't — I highly urge you to ask your local comic shop to pre-order the book for you.  Anderson has additional one-shots planned after this and the way to ensure that is to buy the book.
