"Lenore #10" Comic Review

Written by James Ferguson

Published by Titan Comics

Written and illustrated by Roman Dirge
2014, 24 Pages, $3.99
Comic released on July 23rd, 2014

When we last left the lovable little dead girl Lenore (Hooray for alliteration!), she was caught between a group of genetically enhanced super soldiers and a pair of angry gods.  Meanwhile, Pooty stabbed a guy with his pitchfork, Taxidermy was in full battle mode, and Ragamuffin had somehow made his way into a bear's anus.  This is just a regular day for her really.

You can never guess the direction that creator Roman Dirge will take this comic.  It may start out with a simple concept, but it will quickly spiral into something entirely different but equally hilarious.  This issue begins simple enough with this fight between Taxidermy and the gods.  Then Pooty starts poking stuff with his pitchfork to test if it's working while using a spell to bring inanimate objects to life.  This doesn't seem to be successful at first, but then Lenore's pickle hat, a dead chicken, and some bear poop on a log all spring to life and become characters in the book.  A talking piece of bear poop on a log was probably the last thing that I expected to find when I opened this comic.

Lenore seems unfazed by the turmoil brewing around her.  She's more focused on poking fun at Ragamuffin and the fact that he had ended up in a bear's ass.  I missed the previous issue, so I do not know the circumstances of this, but it gets brought up several times, each in more creative ways.  Just when you think you've seen the last joke, another comes right behind it.  It never seems like Dirge is beating a dead horse though.  Each gag is laugh-out-loud funny.

Dirge's artwork is a perfect fit for the comedy of Lenore.  He is able to set up a joke with little to no dialogue.  Sometimes he doesn't even need to put in a punchline.  Early on, Pooty is thrown through the air, landing a mile away in town on a poor unsuspecting guy.  Pooty hurries back to the fight but is delayed.  When the panel pulls pack, it's revealed that he's been running with the man's disfigured body gored through the horns on his head as Lenore and Ragamuffin stare in shock.

This storyline wraps up with the next issue in which a character will die.  I have no idea who will kick the bucket, but I'd be sad to see any of the characters die as they work so well together.  It's a great comedic team.  If anyone has to go, can it be the pickle hat?  Does he count?  Is it a he?  Do pickle hats have genders?
