Review:

I read a lot of poetry and, sadly, most of it is mediocre. Most poets are either trying to reinvent the wheel, imitating Bukowski, satisfied with writing about love in a plethora using only clichés, or putting together words in the most convoluted, unnecessarily complicated way ever in hopes of impressing fellow poets with the amount of words they know. Horror poetry is a different animal because Poe and Lovecraft are the ones being imitated, but it's otherwise mostly more of the same. Then you have Philip LoPresti.

LoPresti is one of those weird authors who do their own thing regardless of acclaim or popular market trends. He writes what he likes, and the result of that is Haunted Fucking, a poetry book published by Dynatox Ministries that was originally released as a limited edition as is now available for the Kindle. In Haunted Fucking, LoPresti walks the line between madness and love, murder and sex, beauty and ugliness.

Haunted Fucking comes in at only 39 pages, but LoPresti packs each of his 32 "spasms" with so much flesh, sex, bodily fluids, love, and bones that it feels like a longer book. In fact, the book's length works to its advantage because you get enough poems to build a cohesive work, but not enough that it becomes repetitive.

Such a short books warrants a short review, so here's the main reason why you should buy this: it's good. Here's a taste:

Drum with white washed bone.

Cadaver dolls hung sunlight

like bastard fruit.

I clenched you between teeth

and felt the taste of ditches

when a strangled bush of five

meant we were dying.

The words were written

in ovarian dust

and carved on rectums

of eight crippled saints.

Your hymen was a light bulb

that led the way into a seven year rage.

Just forget what you came for

and bury me in the hollowed out vessel of a blue ruin.

LoPresti delivers mayhem, lunacy, blood, and glory holes with the same nonchalance. While some "hardcore" poets drop the word cunt to shock people, LoPresti uses it because sometimes that's just the word you need, and that makes Haunted Fucking an honest, powerful read.

"I am only me and I fucking hate it." That line should be enough to tell readers what kind of atmosphere they'll find in these poems. LoPresti hates himself, but what comes out of that hate is something he should be proud of.
